Novel allosteric inhibition of phosphoribulokinase identified by ensemble kinetic modeling of Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 metabolism

open access: yesMetabolic Engineering Communications, 2020
The present study attempted a computer simulation of the metabolism of a model cyanobacteria, Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 (PCC 6803) to predict allosteric inhibitions that are likely to occur in photoautotrophic and mixotrophic conditions as well as in a ...

A structural perspective on α‐glucan catabolism in oxygenic phototrophs

open access: yesThe Plant Journal, Volume 125, Issue 3, February 2026.
SUMMARY Starch and glycogen are the main α‐glucan storage polymers in oxygenic photoautotrophs, ensuring metabolic continuity during day/night cycles and environmental stress. Their mobilization requires a suite of catabolic enzymes whose activities are tightly regulated to balance carbon storage with energy demands.

Cyanobacterial Extracellular Vesicles as Protein Carriers: Towards Fish Vaccination

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 1, January 2026.
Here, we describe that Synechocystis EVs are stable nanostructures that can induce specific immune responses in fish with additional adjuvant features. It represents a biotechnological breakthrough towards a novel antigen‐carrier platform for sustainable fish‐pathogen control in aquaculture settings. ABSTRACT Fish aquaculture faces significant economic

Cultivation in a Natural Microbial Community Enhances the Industrial Performance of a Genetically Engineered Cyanobacterium for Bioplastic Production

open access: yesMicrobial Biotechnology, Volume 19, Issue 1, January 2026.
We developed a hybrid photosynthetic microbiome, in which the native cyanobacterium of a natural microbial consortium was replaced with a genetically engineered Synechocystis strain optimised for polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB) production. The hybrid system demonstrated improved tolerance to abiotic stresses, making it suitable for upscaling.

Engineering Conditional Transgene Expression in Nicotiana benthamiana

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, Volume 24, Issue 1, Page 18-30, January 2026.
ABSTRACT Nicotiana benthamiana has emerged as a premier plant biofactory for recombinant protein and metabolite production due to its high metabolic versatility, ease of cultivation and permissiveness to transient expression vectors. However, challenges such as transgene silencing, low yields and metabolic toxicity limit its scalability. Synthetic gene

Expression of psbA1 gene in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 is influenced by CO2

open access: yesOpen Life Sciences, 2017
In almost all cyanobacteria a small gene family encodes the photosystem II reaction center D1 proteins that play vital roles in the cell. Recently, several types of this protein were functionally characterised and the conditions for their transcript ...

Phosphomimetic mutations near active sites of proteins in Thermus thermophilus suggest a widespread regulatory mechanism

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, Volume 15, Issue 12, Page 1987-2000, December 2025.
In Thermus thermophilus, more than half of the phosphorylation sites identified by proteomic analysis are located near the active site. All phosphomimetic mutants of phosphosites of six enzymes belonging to different families showed severely reduced activity compared with the wild‐type, particularly in the turnover number.

Utilization of shrimp wastewater for poly-β-hydroxybutyrate production by Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803 strain ΔSphU cultivated in photobioreactor

open access: yesBiotechnology Reports, 2019
The wastewater discharge from the intensive shrimp aquaculture contains high concentration of nutrients, which can lead to eutrophication. This study aimed to reuse the shrimp wastewater for low cost cyanobacterial cultivation to produce biodegradable ...

Effects of a Type I RM System on Gene Expression and Glycogen Catabolism in Synechocystis sp. PCC 6803

open access: yesFrontiers in Microbiology, 2020
Increasing evidence has shown that DNA methylation is involved in gene regulation in prokaryotes. However, there have been very limited reports about the role of DNA methylation in regulation of gene expression and physiological functions in ...
