Development of synovial joints

Birth Defects Research Part C: Embryo Today: Reviews, 2003
AbstractSynovial joints arise through two main processes. In long bone elements, cartilaginous differentiation occurs across the locations of the prospective joints that then segment secondarily. This process occurs through the development of a noncartilaginous region known as the interzone.

Synovial Knee Joint

2016
The knee is a synovial knee joint that allows flexion, extension and also a slight ability to rotate medially and laterally, being able to move on two planes, being known as a modified hinge joint. The main features of a synovial joint are the articulating cartilage, the joint capsule, the joint cavity, the bursae and the ligaments.

Lubrication in Synovial Joints

Nature, 1963
A CRITICAL review of the work of Barnett, Davies, Charnley and MacConaill1–5 indicates that there exists a tendency to explain the lubricating conditions in synovial joints by either the lubricating properties of synovial fluid, or by the lubricating properties of the articular surfaces.

Imaging Inflamed Synovial Joints

2007
As a research tool, medical imaging has considerably increased our understanding of joint inflammation in vivo. Although conventional radiography remains important for diagnosis, other imaging modalities such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and ultrasonography show considerable potential for the study of joint inflammation in the research setting ...

Human Zygapophyseal Joint Synovial Folds

Cells Tissues Organs, 1986
The structure of human zygapophyseal joint synovial folds as seen by high-power light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy is described. Small myelinated nerves are demonstrated in association with some capillaries in the synovial folds. This may have clinical significance in the field of spinal pain.

Temporomandibular joint synovial fluid analysis

British Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1993
A method for the estimation of the synovial fluid volume of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is described. Patients are administered 1.2 g of aspirin and the concentration of salicylate in plasma and in saline aspirates of the TMJ is measured by a sensitive high performance liquid chromatography assay.

Osteochondral repair in synovial joints

Current Opinion in Rheumatology, 2007
One of the major challenges in rheumatology remains the induction of osteochondral repair in synovial joints. Remarkable progress has been made in controlling the inflammatory pathways of chronic synovitis and tissue damage in rheumatoid arthritis and spondyloarthropathy.

Synovial joints — 1

1998
Throughout this chapter and Chapters 13 and 14, reference will be made to articular or joint cartilages. These rest on the articular lamella of bone or articular bone plate, covering over the articular vascular plexus conveying the blood of the articular circulation. In long bones, the epiphyseal bone mass intervenes between the articular cartilage and
