Development of complex syntax in the narratives of children with English as an Additional Language and their monolingual peers

open access: yesLanguage Development Research, 2022
English syntax acquisition is crucial for developing literacy but may be challenging for many children learning English as an Additional Language (EAL).

Complexity in Treatment of Syntactic Deficits [PDF]

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Speech-Language Pathology, 2007
PurposeThis article addresses complexity in the context of treatment for sentence structural impairments in agrammatic aphasia, with emphasis on noncanonical sentences involving linguistic movement and their related counterparts. Extensions of the complexity effect to recovery of canonical sentences also are discussed, stressing the linguistic ...

Syntactic complexity and language contact: A corpus-based study of relative clauses in British English and Indian English

open access: yesRevista Alicantina de Estudios Ingleses, 2017
The aim of the present paper is to test the claim that contact simplifies language (cf. Kusters, 2008) by comparing the domain of relative clause formation in British English, a L1 variety, and Indian English, a L2 variety.

fMRI adaptation dissociates syntactic complexity dimensions [PDF]

open access: yesNeuroImage, 2010
The current fMRI adaptation study sought to elucidate the dimensions of syntactic complexity and their underlying neural substrates. For the first time with fMRI, we investigated repetition suppression (i.e., fMRI adaptation) for two orthogonal dimensions of sentence complexity: embedding position (right-branching vs.

Syntactic complexity of suffix-free languages [PDF]

open access: yesInformation and Computation, 2018
We solve an open problem concerning syntactic complexity: We prove that the cardinality of the syntactic semigroup of a suffix-free language with $n$ left quotients (that is, with state complexity $n$) is at most $(n-1)^{n-2}+n-2$ for $n\ge 6$. Since this bound is known to be reachable, this settles the problem.

Syntactic Complexity Effects in Sentence Production [PDF]

open access: yesCognitive Science, 2014
AbstractSyntactic complexity effects have been investigated extensively with respect to comprehension (e.g., Demberg & Keller, 2008; Gibson, 1998, 2000; Gordon et al., 2001, 2004; Grodner & Gibson, 2005; King & Just, 1991; Lewis & Vasishth, 2005; Lewis et al., 2006; McElree et al., 2003; Wanner & Maratsos, 1978).

Distinct Neurophysiological Patterns Reflecting Aspects of Syntactic Complexity and Syntactic Repair [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Psycholinguistic Research, 2002
Aspects of syntactic complexity and syntactic repair were investigated by comparing the event-related (brain) potentials (ERPs) for sentences of different syntactic complexity to those containing a syntactic violation. Previous research had shown that both aspects of syntactic processing are reflected in a late positivity (P600).

Grammatical Complexity in Research Articles: Iranian Local Journals and International Journals [PDF]

open access: yesIssues in Language Teaching, 2021
This study aimed to investigate the grammatical complexity based on Biber, Gray, Staples, and Egbert’s (2020) linguistic description in research articles published in Iranian local journals and international journals.

Syntactic complexity and elaborative processing [PDF]

open access: yesMemory & Cognition, 1981
Memory for sentences as a function of the syntactic complexity of the sentences was examined. Sentence complexity was varied through a manipulation that involved presenting sentences in either self-embedded forms or more standard forms. Subjects performed an incidental semantic orienting task on a set of sentences varying in complexity and were ...

Syntactic and lexical complexity in L2 English academic writing: Development and competition

open access: yesAmpersand, 2022
Academic writing is both challenging and essential for university students studying in a second language. Linguistic complexity is a useful indicator of second language development, including academic writing.
