Investigating Syntactic Complexity in EFL Learners' Writing across Common European Framework of Reference Levels A1, A2, and B1

open access: yesApplied Linguistics, 2020
The study investigates the linguistic basis of Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR) levels in English as a foreign language (EFL) learners’ writing. Specifically, it examines whether CEFR levels can be distinguished with reference to syntactic

MEASURING LONGITUDINAL WRITING DEVELOPMENT USING INDICES OF SYNTACTIC COMPLEXITY AND SOPHISTICATION

open access: yesStudies in Second Language Acquisition, 2020
Measures of syntactic complexity such as mean length of T-unit have been common measures of language proficiency in studies of second language acquisition.

Contact at the treetops: syntactic borrowing and syntactic complexity

open access: yesDilbilim Araştırmaları Dergisi
We examine the function and structure of ki-clauses in Modern Greek dialects of Trabzon (Romeyka), Silli, Cappadocia and Pharasa. We demonstrate that ki, transferred from Turkish, has been integrated into the clausal spine of these dialects in JudgeP ...

Syntactic complexity and inflections in the written production of L1 and L2 French [PDF]

open access: yesBucharest Working Papers in Linguistics, 2016
Very little is known about the effect of syntactic complexity on written language production. This study investigated the effect of syntactic complexity on the accuracy of gender marking in written L1 and L2 French.

Syntactic complexity across registers: Investigating (in)formality in second-language writing

open access: yesJournal of English for Academic Purposes, 2020
Syntactic complexity (i.e. the grammatical sophistication exhibited in language production) has been found to be positively correlated with formality. In viewing formality as a cline rather than as a dichotomy, the present study revisits previous claims ...

Syntactic Complexity of Bifix-Free Languages [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We study the properties of syntactic monoids of bifix-free regular languages. In particular, we solve an open problem concerning syntactic complexity: We prove that the cardinality of the syntactic semigroup of a bifix-free language with state complexity $n$ is at most $(n-1)^{n-3}+(n-2)^{n-3}+(n-3)2^{n-3}$ for $n\ge 6$.

Syntactic complexity

open access: yesInformation and Control, 1974
Several measures of syntactic complexity in mathematical linguistics allow infinitely many sentences to share a complexity value. Thus there is doubt about the existence of bounds on the memory requirements of parsing mechanisms in terms of the complexities of their inputs.

Syntactic complexity as a stylistic feature of subtitles [PDF]

open access: yesStudia Translatorica, 2020
In audiovisual translation, stylometry can be used to measure formal-aesthetic fidelity. We present a corpus-based measure of syntactic complexity as a feature of language style.

Disordered but rhythmic—the role of intrinsic protein disorder in eukaryotic circadian timing

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Unstructured domains known as intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are present in nearly every part of the eukaryotic core circadian oscillator. IDRs enable many diverse inter‐ and intramolecular interactions that support clock function. IDR conformations are highly tunable by post‐translational modifications and environmental conditions, which ...
