Foams consisting of blends of a polyimide resin and glass microbubbles were prepared to provide thermal protection and energy absorption. With the selected type of glass microbubble, tests wre conducted to measure the effect of foam formulation, microbubble strength, and molding pressure on certain mechanical, thermal, and environmental properties.

Thermally conductive syntactic foam
A low density, high thermal conductivity syntactic foam has been formulated from carbon and graphite microballoons with a polyimide binder resin and graphite fibers. The flexural properties of strength and deflection were increased by using the graphite fibers and the failure mode was increased from a brittle to an elastic mode.

Electrospun Polyamide Nanofiber-Reinforced Hybrid Syntactic Foams
The potential of polyamide nanofibers towards improving the mechanical properties of syntactic foams is demonstrated. Nylon nanofibers were prepared by electrospinning, and the operating parameters, namely solution concentration and flow rate varied to obtain fibers of requisite dimensions.
