Polymer Composites, 1984
AbstractThree‐phase syntactic foams consisting of a close‐packed microballoons bed, binding resin, and air voids are reported. Preparation methods varied from simple dry‐blending with a solid powdery resin‐to‐resin coating of spheres from polymer solutions.

Pumice/aluminium syntactic foam
Materials Science and Engineering: A, 2015Abstract A novel filler material is introduced to produce high strength metal-matrix syntactic foam. Packed beds of pumice particles, a low-cost natural porous volcanic glass, with the size range of 2.8–4 mm were infiltrated with molten aluminium alloy. The resulting syntactic foams were subjected to microstructural observations and chemical analysis.

Abstract Syntactic carbon is a low density composite material composed of hollow carbon microspheres bonded by a meniscus of carbonised resin. It has a high strength to density ratio coupled with useful thermal insulating properties and is specially useful for high temperature applications. The paper reviews the raw materials and processes which have

Syntactic bulk metallic glass foam
Applied Physics Letters, 2004An amorphous metal foam with a bulk density of 3.4 g/cm3 is created by low-pressure melt infiltration of the bulk metallic glass-forming alloy Zr57Nb5Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10 into a bed of hollow carbon microspheres, followed by rapid quenching. The foam consists of a glassy metallic matrix containing ∼60 vol. % of homogenously distributed carbon microspheres,

Development of rubberized syntactic foam
Composites Part A: Applied Science and Manufacturing, 2007Abstract This study explored a novel hybrid syntactic foam for composite sandwich structures. A unique microstructure was designed and realized. The hybrid foam was fabricated by dispersing styrene–butadiene rubber latex coated glass microballoons into a nanoclay and milled glass fiber reinforced epoxy matrix. The manufacturing process for developing
