Characterisation of hybrid metal matrix syntactic foams [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
High quality aluminium matrix syntactic foams (AMSFs) were produced by pressure infiltration. This method can ensure the maximal volume fraction of the reinforcing hollow spheres and very low amount of unwanted or matrix porosities. By this method hybrid

Sustainable metallic syntactic foams containing cork particles

open access: yesMaterials Letters, 2023
Metallic syntactic foams are fabricated through the combination of ZA27 alloy and cork particles. This novel methodology embodies a holistic sustainability paradigm, harnessing a fully recyclable metal matrix alongside naturally proliferating cork. It results in samples with densities from 2007 to 2251 kg/m3 and around 60 % porosity.

Electrocardiographic R Wave Peak Time: Correlation With the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease and Prognosis in Patients With Acute Coronary Syndrome

open access: yesCatheterization and Cardiovascular Interventions, Volume 106, Issue 2, Page 1225-1232, August 1, 2025.
ABSTRACT Background Electrocardiographic parameters have emerged as valuable noninvasive markers for risk stratification in acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Aims This study aimed to evaluate the correlation between R wave peak time (RWPT) and coronary artery disease (CAD) severity, and to assess its prognostic value for in‐hospital major adverse cardiac ...

A Numerical Simulation of Machining 6061 Syntactic Foams Reinforced with Hollow Al2O3 Shells

open access: yesMetals, 2022
Aluminum closed cell syntactic foams possess reduced density, higher peak compression strength, and lower coefficient of thermal expansion and thermal conductivity compared to metal alloys.

Olfaction Contributes to Pelagic Navigation in a Coastal Shark. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
How animals navigate the constantly moving and visually uniform pelagic realm, often along straight paths between distant sites, is an enduring mystery. The mechanisms enabling pelagic navigation in cartilaginous fishes are particularly understudied.

Compressibility of Elastomer Matrix Composites Filled With Hollow Thermoplastic Microspheres Under Low Hydrostatic Pressure

open access: yesStrain, Volume 61, Issue 4, August 2025.
This study examines the pressure‐volume response of elastomeric matrix composites containing hollow thermoplastic microspheres under low hydrostatic pressures. Experiments combining nitrogen pressurisation and digital image correlation show that the critical pressure due to successive buckling of the microspheres is independent of their concentration ...

Acoustic emission analyses of the hygrothermal ageing of glass syntactic foams

open access: yesScience and Engineering of Composite Materials, 2011
In deepwater offshore production, thermal insulation of pipelines and risers is now commonly made with glass syntactic foams. These composite materials offer both good insulation properties and pressure resistance, and also provide buoyancy to the ...

An aquatic mesocosm array to regulate spatial and temporal water temperature variability

open access: yesLimnology and Oceanography: Methods, Volume 23, Issue 7, Page 467-481, July 2025.
Abstract Temporal and spatial variability in temperature are key habitat features that will determine individual, population, and community‐level responses to global climate warming. Lakes and ponds exhibit thermal heterogeneity in the form of diel and seasonal fluctuations as well as vertical stratification; however, experimental studies of warming in

Ring artifacts correction in compressed sensing tomographic reconstruction

open access: yes, 2015
We present a novel approach to handle ring artifacts correction in compressed sensing tomographic reconstruction. The correction is part of the reconstruction process, which differs from classical sinogram pre-processing and image post-processing ...

Backward swimming in elongated‐bodied abyssal demersal fishes: Synaphobranchidae, Macrouridae, and Ophidiidae

open access: yesJournal of Fish Biology, Volume 107, Issue 1, Page 52-62, July 2025.
Abstract The deep‐sea demersal fish fauna is characterized by a prevalence of elongated‐body forms with long tapering tails. Using baited camera landers at depths of 4500–6300 m in the Pacific Ocean, we observed multiple instances of backward swimming using reverse undulation of the slender body in four species: the cutthroat eel Ilyophis robinsae ...
