Concerning the automaticity of syntactic processing
Psychophysiology, 1999In a within‐subjects design, event‐related potentials were compared for two types of sentence‐final syntactic errors: Incorrect verb inflection and incorrect word category (phrase structure). In a grammatical judgment task, these errors triggered robust N400 and P600 components.

Neuroimaging of syntax and syntactic processing
Current Opinion in Neurobiology, 2006Recent results challenge and refine the prevailing view of the way language is represented in the human brain. Syntactic knowledge and processing mechanisms that implement syntax in use are mapped onto neural tissue in experiments that harness both syntactic concepts and imaging technologies to the study of brain mechanisms in healthy and impaired ...

This book covers topics in formal linguistics, intonational phonology, computational linguistics, and experimental psycholinguistics, presenting them as an integrated theory of the language faculty. In this book Mark Steedman argues that the surface syntax of natural languages maps spoken and written forms directly to a compositional ...

Notes on the biology of syntactic processing
Journal of Psycholinguistic Research, 1989Recent developments in psycholinguistics, neurology, and brain imaging technology may have made it possible to integrate linguistic, psychological, and neurological approaches to the study of syntactic processing. In an integrated approach, observations of the brain itself, or observations that are linked to it, enrich the database on which processing ...

The independence of syntactic processing
Journal of Memory and Language, 1986Abstract Three experiments addressed the question whether semantic content or pragmatic context can direct the initial syntactic analysis assigned to sentences. Each experiment determined whether syntactic processing biases that have been observed in sentences presented in isolation can be overcome.

The Isolability of Syntactic Processing
1989In this chapter we explore a controversial hypothesis about the nature of the syntactic processing system. The hypothesis, roughly stated, is that some of the procedures that create grammatical patterns in sentences are in an important sense indifferent to the content of the symbols they manipulate, in somewhat the same way that the procedures for long

Efficient processing of speech and language is required at all levels in the design of human-computer interfaces. In this perspective, the book provides a global understanding of the required theoretical foundations, as well as practical examples of successful applications, in the area of human-language technology.

Age Differences in On-Line Syntactic Processing
Experimental Aging Research, 2000Reading time and comprehension for subject-relative (e.g., The pilot that admired the nurse dominated the conversation) and object-relative (e.g., The pilot that the nurse admired dominated the conversation) constructions were compared among younger and older readers.

Syntactic Processing of Unknown Words
1990A method for processing sentences which contain unknown words, i. e. words for which no lexical entry exists, is presented. There are three different stages of processing: 1 The sentence with the unknown word is parsed. There are no special requirements for the parsing algorithm, but the lexical lookup procedure needs to be modified. 2 Based on

MacWhinney (1978) presented a computational model of the acquisition of morphophonology. The present chapter attempts to extend the model presented in that earlier paper to the acquisition of word-order patterns. This extension is supported by an examination of the previous research on syntactic acquisition. In the final section of the chapter, further
