The Darlington Synthesis Problem
2018The (scalar-valued) Darlington synthesis problem from electrical network theory asks the following question. Given a ∈ H∞, do there exist b, c, d ∈ H∞ such that the matrix-valued analytic function $$\displaystyle U = \begin {bmatrix} a & -b \\ c & d \end {bmatrix} $$ is unitary almost everywhere on \(\mathbb {T}\)?

The problem of frequency synthesis
Journal of the British Institution of Radio Engineers, 1961Frequency synthesis employs precise frequency standards to obtain by means of a frequency conversion process many output frequencies from the one accurate source, each of which can be individually selected. The output frequencies are multiples of harmonic fractions of the frequency standard.

In this chapter, the network synthesis problem is introduced. Section 2.2 is devoted to the description of some practical applications, that is, the restoration and the multi-hour problems. In Section 2.3, we first introduce some notation. Then, two linear integer formulations are provided for the general network synthesis problem (with non ...

The Problem of Synthesis in Biology
Philosophy of Science, 1942The problem of synthesis in biology may have reference to the evolutionary origin of living organisms in past time, a process not directly observable but conceivably reconstructible in broad outline: thus to the biochemist this evolution may appear as the evolution of the special biological compounds, to the psychologist as the evolution of “mind”—or ...

The spectral synthesis problem
1975We suppose as known the basic theory of harmonic analysis as found in [R u din, 5, Chapter 1] and the basic theory of commutative Banach algebras as found in [Loomis, 1, Chapter 4]. In this Paragraph 1.1, we quickly restate some of the necessary results from harmonic analysis in order to establish notation; and proceed far enough along to give a proof ...
