The principal function of the chloroplast is to capture solar quanta and to store them in some stable form. We are in the process of trying to construct a totally synthetic system that would simulate some of the reactions of the two photosystems which occur in natural chloroplasts.

Synthetic Genomes for Synthetic Biology [PDF]
A genome synthesized entirely from scratch has been used to replace the native genome of a living cell, thus creating a new cell. This achievement marks a new frontier in synthetic biology to design and create genomes for organisms with few genetic tools and for applications in areas of energy, health care and the environment.

Crystallographic observation of nonenzymatic RNA primer extension
The importance of genome replication has inspired detailed crystallographic studies of enzymatic DNA/RNA polymerization. In contrast, the mechanism of nonenzymatic polymerization is less well understood, despite its critical role in the origin of life ...

This article examines the making and makers of “memorial diamonds.” These are “natural” diamonds identical to gemstones found in nature but produced in laboratories with carbon sourced from genetic material (cremation ashes) or other objects of symbolic

Chemical communication between synthetic and natural cells: a possible experimental design [PDF]
The bottom-up construction of synthetic cells is one of the most intriguing and interesting research arenas in synthetic biology. Synthetic cells are built by encapsulating biomolecules inside lipid vesicles (liposomes), allowing the synthesis of one or ...

Preliminary analysis of wave retrieval from Chinese Gaofen-3 SAR imagery in the Arctic Ocean
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) is a powerful tool for sea surface monitoring. The 2017–2020 mission of the Chinese Gaofen-3 (GF-3) over the Arctic Ocean provided a unique opportunity to investigate the feasibility of wave retrieval in the Arctic Ocean ...

Thermodynamic modelling of synthetic communities predicts minimum free energy requirements for sulfate reduction and methanogenesis [PDF]
Microbial communities are complex dynamical systems harbouring many species interacting together to implement higher-level functions. Among these higher-level functions, conversion of organic matter into simpler building blocks by microbial communities ...

What a living organism looks like and how it works and what are its components-all this is encoded on DNA, the genetic blueprint. Consequently, the way to change an organism is to change its genetic information. Since the first pieces of recombinant DNA have been used to transform cells in the 1970s, this approach has been enormously extended.
