Test results for a synthetic aperture sonar (SAS)

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1997
A special purpose synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) system has been developed and built by Hughes Aircraft Co. and Dynamics Technology, Inc. The main features of the system are a 3.2-m-long, 32-element linear array, and a data acquisition system capable of recording the elemental data in real time while preserving the phase and amplitude fidelity required

On the use of higher order statistics in SAS imagery [synthetic aperture sonar]

2004 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2004
Synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) imagery is largely used in detection, location and classification of underwater mines laying on or buried in the sea bed. This paper proposes a detection method using higher order statistics (HOS) on SAS images. The proposed method can be divided into two steps.

12.75" Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS), High Resolution and Automatic Target Recognition

OCEANS 2006, 2006
The Autonomous Operations Future Naval Capability (AOFNC) program developed a 12.75" diameter autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) and a synthetic aperture sonar (SAS12) payload. This system falls under the lightweight designator of the Unmanned Undersea Vehicle (UUV) master plan.

Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) and Autonomous Underwater Vehicles - Essential Tools for Exploration of Hydrocarbon Seeps

Proceedings, 2014
Natural gas seepages are of great interest for the petroleum industry, both for prospecting and environmental reasons. Gas flares originating from gas seeps can be fairly easily identified by multibeam water column data, but further investigations require observations from close range.

Tilted aluminum cylinder acoustic scattering properties and holographic and synthetic aperture sonar (SAS) images

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2007
A solid bluntly-truncated aluminum cylinder in water is a convenient target for exploring the relationship between free-field scattering properties of short tone-bursts and acoustic images. These experiments concern situations where the product ka of the acoustic wave number and the cylinder radius exceed about 12.

Study of Environmental Influences on Phase Fluctuations and Their Effect on Synthetic Aperture Sonars (SAS)

1999
Abstract : An acoustic propagation experiment designed to investigate how Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS) is affected by the underwater environment was conducted off the eastern U.S. coastline near Marthas Vineyard in August 1996. This report describes the effect of this shallow-water, underwater environment on the phase of propagating acoustic signals.

Ambiguity Function and Cramer-Rao Lower Bounds for Passive Synthetic Aperture Sonar (SAS)

OCEANS 2006 - Asia Pacific, 2006
The resolving power of passive SAS is addressed by computing and plotting its ambiguity function in the frequency/bearing plane. It is proven that, even in ideal conditions, the apparently better spatial resolution of passive SAS is due only to the better frequency resolution which results from the longer processing time.
