Plasma Synthetic Jet for Flow Control

40th Fluid Dynamics Conference and Exhibit, 2010
The necessity of having an efficient actuator to control flow has driven ONERA to develop a pioneer actuator called Plasma Synthetic Jet (PSJ). This actuator was inspired by the John Hopkins University device. It produces a high exhaust velocity jet using electrical power.

Two-Dimensional Synthetic Jet Simulation

AIAA Journal, 2000
Direct numerical simulation was used to model an array of two-dimensional synthetic slot jets pulsing into initially quiescent e ow. Such zero-net mass-e ux jets can represent an array of microelectromechanical systems. Fluid ejected by the pulsing jets rolls up into vortex pairs that propagate as a result of their mutually induced velocity ...

Noise Characteristics Contrastive Analysis of Dual Synthetic Jets Actuator and Synthetic Jet Actuator

2021
Dual synthetic jets actuator (DSJA) has great potential application in airfoil separation flow control, jet vector control, heat dissipation and other aspects. However, DSJA can make noise of more than 80 dB under the optimal working frequency, which is very unfavorable for the application of DSJA in practical engineering.

Measurements of Synthetic Jets in a Boundary Layer

2008
PIV measurements along the centerline of a synthetic jet embedded in a flat plate boundary layer were conducted for three types of jet vortex structures identified by the authors in previous flow visualization studies, namely hairpin vortices, stretched vortex rings and tilted vortex rings. The primary purpose of this work was to quantify the near wall

Visualization study of hybrid synthetic jets

Journal of Visualization, 2014
A synthetic jet (SJ) is a fluid flow that is created from an oscillatory process of suction and blowing. A hybrid synthetic jet (HSJ) combines this principle with fluidic pumping through a valveless pump. The present study addresses round HSJs issuing into quiescent surroundings from an actuator orifice 8 mm in diameter.

Visualization of synthetic jet formation in air

Journal of Visualization, 2015
This experimental study deals with a round synthetic jet (SJ) issuing into quiescent surroundings. Flow visualization in air is used to identify different flow field regimes. Hot-wire anemometry and theoretical evaluations are used to quantify parameters in terms of the Reynolds (Re) and Stokes (S) numbers.

Modified flapping jet for increased jet spreading using synthetic jets

International Journal of Heat and Fluid Flow, 2011
Abstract The present paper is an experimental investigation, using a PIV system, on modified rectangular jet flow co-flowing with a pair of synthetic jets placed symmetrically with respect to the geometric centerline of the main flow. The objective was to determine the optimal forcing conditions that would result in jet spreading beyond what would be

Characterization of Synthetic Jet Resonant Cavities

2014
The acoustic properties of piezo-electric driven resonant cavities usually employed to generate the so-called synthetic jets are analytically and numerically investigated in order to characterize the performances of such devices. It is shown that the actuator behaves as a two-coupled oscillators system and the dimensionless form of the governing ...

Synthetic jets with piezoelectric diaphragms

SPIE Proceedings, 2005
Piezoelectric diaphragms are used as synthetic jets because of their size, rapid time response, and relatively low power consumption. Among the piezoelectric diaphragms used are unimorphs and Bimorphs. In this study, a bimorph diaphragm, a thin Unimorph pre-stressed device and a Radial Field Diaphragm (RFD) are compared.

SYNTHETIC JET MICROPUMP

2014
The production of a novel micropump based on the synthetic jet principle is investigated both numerically and experimentally. The proposed micropump consists of a synthetic jet actuator driven by a vibrating diaphragm issuing into an inverted T- shaped channel structure forming the inlet/outlet channels of the pump.
