Lumped Element Modelling of Synthetic Jet Actuators

3rd AIAA Flow Control Conference, 2006
In this paper, a lumped element model of synthetic jet actuator is presented and used to predict the temporal variation of the jet velocity. Unlike the previous model reported in the literature, in this model the mechanical movement of the diaphragm is decoupled from the fluid phenomenon in the actuator cavity to allow the modelling of fluid mechanics ...

Incompressible Flow Model of Synthetic Jet Actuators

AIAA Journal, 2006
A performance prediction model is developed for circular synthetic jet actuators in which the flow is assumed to be incompressible. Accurate prediction of the behavior of synthetic jets is challenging because of their complex unsteady nature. The importance of dimensionless stroke length and Reynolds number in determining the characteristics was ...

A Jet Formation Criterion for Synthetic Jet Actuators

41st Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2003
This paper proposes and validates a jet formation criterion for synthetic jet actuators. The synthetic jet is a zero net mass flux device, adding additional momentum but no mass to its surroundings. Jet formation is defined as a mean outward velocity along the jet axis and corresponds to the clear formation of shed vortices.

Semiconductor enhanced plasma synthetic jet actuator

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2020
Abstract Designing a plasma synthetic jet actuator (PSJA) with high efficiency and low driving voltage is a permanent and unchangeable pursuit for researchers. Based on the surface flashover phenomenon of semiconductors, a novel semiconductor enhanced PSJA (SEPSJA) is put forward.

Pneumatically actuated micromachined synthetic jet modulators

Sensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2006
Abstract Results presented in the synthetic jet literature have focused on the demonstration of and application of one or more single-orifice synthetic jet actuators in jet vectoring and other aerodynamic applications. For these applications, amplitude and phase modulation techniques are often used in conjunction with the oscillatory nature of the ...

New Generation of Synthetic Jet Actuators

AIAA Journal, 2006
I N the last 20 years, much attention has been given to developing microfluidic systems [1]. Among them, synthetic-jet actuators (SJA) have been intensely studied recently [2]. Synthetic-jet actuators have many potential applications such as jet vectoring [3,4], boundary-layer control [5,6], combustion control [7], and micro-pumps [8], etc. A synthetic-

Chip-scale electrodynamic synthetic jet actuators

2015 28th IEEE International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems (MEMS), 2015
We report a chip-scale electrodynamic synthetic jet actuator that integrates both a coil and a wax-bonded NdFeB permanent magnet using standard silicon micromachining processes. A copper micro-coil and a poly-dimethyl-siloxane (PDMS) diaphragm with the magnet are fabricated onto two different dies.

Numerical simulation of synthetic jet actuators

4th Shear Flow Control Conference, 1997
A promising design of fluid actuators for flow control is investigated. Two-dimensional, incompressible simulations of synthetic jet actuators are performed. A modeled boundary condition is developed for the actuator. Three different velocity distributions along the orifice are examined and all three distributions give qualitatively similar flow ...

Torque generation using synthetic jet actuators

Proceedings of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, Part E: Journal of Process Mechanical Engineering
This article presents a novel method of utilizing the thrust generated by synthetic jet actuators to generate torque. Piezoelectric-based synthetic jet actuators were used to create a device with two isolated cavities and orifices. Weight balance and hotwire anemometry were used to quantify the thrust generated by the synthetic jet actuator.
