Pulsating and synthetic impinging jets
Journal of Visualization, 2005This is the second part of a survey summarizing authors' research over a period of two decades on enhancing impinging jet heat and/or mass transfer by periodic unsteadiness of nozzle flow rate. The first part, Tesar and Travnicek (2004 b), identified the reasons why pulsation does not always improve the transfer rate: the pulses do not reach up to the ...

Vectoring of Adjacent Synthetic Jets
AIAA Journal, 2005The formation, evolution, and interactions of a closely spaced pair of coflowing rectangular synthetic jets are investigated using particle image velocimetry. The dynamics of the combined jet is determined by the interactions of the counter-rotating vortex pairs that form each jet.

Microfabricated Electrodynamic Synthetic Jet Actuators
Journal of Microelectromechanical Systems, 2018This paper presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a chip-scale electrodynamic synthetic jet actuator with batch-fabricated die components. The actuator is an assembly of two dies with a plastic spacer sandwiched in between. The top die consists of a copper micro-coil and an orifice through which the jet is synthesized. The bottom die

Electronic Cooling Using Synthetic Jets
Heat Transfer: Volume 4, 2005Efficiency of synthetic jet impingement cooling and the mechanisms of heat removal from a constant heat flux surface were investigated experimentally. The effects of jet’s formation frequency and Reynolds number at different nozzle-to-surface distances were investigated and compared to steady jet cooling.

Instability Process in Synthetic Jets
49th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including the New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2011This paper discusses the instability process in synthetic jets and how they transitioned into turbulent continuous flow. Axisymmetric synthetic jet was investigated and the results were compared against conventional turbulent jet and previous studies for synthetic jet.

Transitory Behavior of Synthetic Jets
Volume 1: Symposia, Parts A and B, 2005The transitory behavior of an isolated synthetic (zero net mass flux) jet was investigated experimentally using PIV and hot-wire anemometry. In the present work, the synthetic jet was produced over a broad range of length- and time-scales, where three formation frequencies, f = 300, 917, and 3100Hz, several stroke lengths (between 5 and 50 times the ...

Optimization of Synthetic Jet Actuators
41st Aerospace Sciences Meeting and Exhibit, 2003Abstract : This paper describes the optimization of a piezoelectric-driven synthetic jet actuator based on a Lumped Element Modeling (LEM). To simplify the problem, this papers splits the optimization problem into two parts. First, a constrained optimization of the cavity volume and orifice dimensions of two baseline synthetic jets, each with a given ...

Low Frequency Piezoelectric Synthetic Jets
ASME 2010 Conference on Smart Materials, Adaptive Structures and Intelligent Systems, Volume 1, 2010Active cooling is often required for circuit boards with high heat generation densities. Synthetic jets driven with piezoelectric actuators offer interesting capabilities for localized active cooling of electronics due to their compact size, low cost and substantial cooling effectiveness.

The production of a novel micropump based on the synthetic jet principle is investigated both numerically and experimentally. The proposed micropump consists of a synthetic jet actuator driven by a vibrating diaphragm issuing into an inverted T- shaped channel structure forming the inlet/outlet channels of the pump.
