Szilard engine reversibility as quantum gate function [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of SPIE, 2012
A quantum gate is a logically and thermodynamically reversible situation that effects a unitary transformation of qubits of superimposed information, and essentially constitutes a situation for a reversible quantum decision.

Maxwell’s Demon, Szilard Engine and Landauer Principle [PDF]

open access: yesResonance, 2019
The second law of thermodynamics is probabilistic in nature. Its formulation requires that the state of a system be described by a probability distribution. A natural question, thereby, arises as to whether a prior knowledge about the state of the system

Variations on a demonic theme: Szilard’s other engines [PDF]

open access: yesChaos, 2020
Szilard’s now-famous single-molecule engine was only the first of three constructions he introduced in 1929 to resolve several challenges arising from Maxwell’s demon paradox. Given that it has been thoroughly analyzed, we analyze Szilard’s remaining two demon models.

Cooling Classical Particles with a Microcanonical Szilard Engine [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2010
We discuss the possibility of extraction of energy from a single heat bath in a cyclic process, under some special initial conditions. We give an explicit example in which a system initially prepared in a microcanonical ensemble, is able to perform such operation.

Szilard's heat engine

Europhysics Letters, 1996
Szilard presented the first concrete embodyment of a Maxwell demon. We present a detailed kinematic analysis of his heat engine. We find that the phase space contains a branched manifold. After defining carefully the physical dynamics on such an object, we prove that the engine must operate at a loss.

Quantum szilard engine: thermodynamic uncertainty and information processing via quantum computing

Physica Scripta
In this work, we experimentally investigate the lower bound of the thermodynamic uncertainty relation (TUR) using a quantum Maxwell’s demon, specifically modeled as a Szilard engine.

Parity effect and phase transitions in quantum Szilard engines

Physical Review E, 2012
Quantum Szilard engines with an arbitrary number of identical particles are studied in this paper. Analytical expressions for the total work in the low- and high-temperature limits are obtained. The total work depends on both the particle statistics, the odd-even parity, and the temperature of the system. The parity effect is drastic in fermion systems.

Szilard’s Engine: Measurement, Information, and Maxwell’s Demon

AIP Conference Proceedings, 2002
Using an isolated measurement process, we calculate the effect measurement has on entropy for the multi‐cylinder Szilard engine. We find that the system of cylinders possesses an entropy associated with cylinder total energy states, and that it records information transferred at measurement. Contrary to other’s results, we find that the apparatus loses
