The FEBS Journal, Volume 291, Issue 14, Page 3169-3190, July 2024.In this study, we show that the transforming growth factor β co‐receptor CD109 is a protease inhibitor. It has a bait region that is susceptible to cleavage by proteases. Bait region cleavage causes CD109 to change conformation. This exposes a thiol ester group which conjugates the cleaving protease, trapping it in a complex with CD109.
