Feeding Behavior Of Haematophagous Tabanids (Diptera)

Journal of Medical Entomology, 1970
Comparative studies were made on the sugar-feeding behavior in 2 common North American haematophagous tabanids, Chrysops vittatus Wiedmann and Hybomitra lasiophthalma Macquart. The 2 tabanid species fed on sucrose solutions, sucrose cubes and dry crop smears, although they exhibited differences when applying the proboscis to the carbohydrate food ...

PHAGOSTIMULANTS OF HAEMATOPHAGOUS TABANIDS (DIPTERA)

Entomologia Experimentalis et Applicata, 1969
Factors that monitor the dispatch of ingested food to crop and/or midgut were examined. Amino acids in aqueous solution (at 0.05 M and 0.005 M) with fixed pH were largely ineffective, however, some activity was noticed when a select group of these were offered in a phosphate buffer (0.133 M: pH 7.4).

Mechanical transmission of anaplasmosis by tabanids (Diptera: Tabanidae)

American Journal of Veterinary Research, 1982
SUMMARY The role of tabanids in the mechanical transmission of anaplasmosis was further clarified by determining the number of horse fly bites needed to transmit the disease and the length of time that horse flies remain mechanically infective.

Simplified media for spiroplasmas associated with tabanid flies

Canadian Journal of Microbiology, 2002
Traditionally, isolation, maintenance, and testing of Spiroplasma species (Mollicutes: Entomoplasmatales) from horse flies (Tabanus spp.) and deer flies (Chrysops spp.) (Diptera: Tabanidae) have been accomplished in the complex M1D medium. A relatively inexpensive, simplified medium for tabanid spiroplasmas could expedite procedures that require large ...

Development ofTrypanosoma (M.) theileriin Tabanids

Journal of Eukaryotic Microbiology, 1993
ABSTRACTThus far the life cycle ofTrypanosoma (Megatrypanum) theilerihas not been studied. We collected tabanids during the mass hatching, when only few tabanids are infected with trypanosomes. Tabanids were caught immediately after attacking a bait cow to serve as controls or after they had been allowed to engorge on theTrypanosoma (M.) theileri ...

Molecular detection of Megatrypanum trypanosomes in tabanid flies

Medical and Veterinary Entomology, 2019
Abstract Trypanosomes of the subgenus Megatrypanum have been isolated from many mammalian hosts around the world. They are usually non‐pathogenic, although they may confuse the parasitological diagnosis of trypanosomosis.

Blood Feeding and Oviposition by Tabanids (Diptera) in the Laboratory

Journal of Medical Entomology, 1985
Deer flies and horse flies (Diptera: Tabanidae) were collected during 1983–1984 from pastures and salt marshes in Connecticut, USA. Females were given warmed (31–37 °C), citrated beef blood in the laboratory by Kimwipe tissues soaked with blood or by membrane feeding devices. Of the 673 tabanids observed, 152 (22.6%) ingested blood.

Area Control of Tabanids with Naled, 1976

Insecticide and Acaricide Tests, 1977
Abstract The Scottsbluff area treated was 182 acres of lowland pasture in which 2 streams and 2 ponds are located. In addition, waste water from surrounding irrigation also drains into the area causing additional moist, swampy areas. The chemical was diluted with water with a pH of 8.2. This mixture was applied by airplane at the rate of
