Medicinal Plants for the Treatment of Local Tissue Damage Induced by Snake Venoms: An Overview from Traditional Use to Pharmacological Evidence

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
Snakebites are a serious problem in public health due to their high morbimortality. Most of snake venoms produce intense local tissue damage, which could lead to temporary or permanent disability in victims. The available specific treatment is the antivenom serum therapy, whose effectiveness is reduced against these effects.

Tropical Refuges with Exceptionally High Phylogenetic Diversity Reveal Contrasting Phylogenetic Structures

open access: yesInternational Journal of Biodiversity, Volume 2015, Issue 1, 2015., 2015
Loss of phylogenetic diversity (PD) has gained increasing attention in conservation biology. However, PD is not equally distributed in a phylogeny and can be better assessed when species relatedness (phylogenetic structure: PS) is also considered. Here, we investigate PD and PS in two refuges of biodiversity in northeastern Brazil: the Bahia Costal ...

Exploring the Links between Ethnobotany, Local Therapeutic Practices, and Protected Areas in Santa Catarina Coastline, Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2012, Issue 1, 2012., 2012
We investigated the knowledge of medicinal plants in two areas proposed for the creation of protected areas for sustainable use in the city of Imbituba (SC). In this study, we analyzed the influence of gender, form of learning, and modern medicine on medicinal plant knowledge while also reflecting on the relationship of this knowledge to in situ ...

Antibacterial activity of crude extract of Tabernaemontana catharinensis latex (A. DC) against Alicyclobacillus spp.

open access: yesResearch, Society and Development, 2021
Alicyclobacillus spp. is composed of Gram-positive, aerobic, thermoacidophilic, endospore-forming bacteria that cause food and beverage spoilage. The presence of Alicyclobacillus spp. may result in the production of guaiacol, which leads to sensory changes in the odour and taste of citrus juices and acidic foods. Tabernaemontana catharinensis (A.

The antiviral and virucidal activities of voacangine and structural analogs extracted from Tabernaemontana cymosa depend on the Dengue virus strain [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Currently, no specific licensed antiviral exists for treating the illness caused by dengue virus (DENV). Therefore, the search for compounds of natural origin with antiviral activity is an important area of research. In the present study, three compounds

TRPA1 involvement in analgesia induced by Tabernaemontana catharinensis ethyl acetate fraction in mice

open access: yesPhytomedicine, 2019
Ionic channels such as the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) are essential for the detection and transmission of painful stimuli. In this sense, new TRPA1 antagonists have been searched as analgesics.Preclinical studies support the antinociceptive activity of Tabernaemontana catharinensis ethyl acetate fraction (Eta), which has ...

Widespread negative effects of Leucaena leucocephala (white‐popinac) invasion on regenerating areas of the Atlantic Forest

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 6, Issue 4, October–December 2025.
Fragment of Atlantic Forest (left) naturally regenerating in an abandoned pasture (centre) and being invaded by a large patch of white‐popinac (Leucaena leucocephala; right). This image summarizes the scenario of invasion by white‐popinac that is directly threatening forest regeneration and its native diversity.
