Enhancing Corrosion Resistance and Mechanical Strength of 3D‐Printed Iron Polylactic Acid for Marine Applications via Laser Surface Texturing

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Laser surface texturing significantly improves the corrosion resistance and mechanical strength of 3D‐printed iron polylactic acid (Ir‐PLA) for marine applications. Optimal laser parameters reduce corrosion by 80% and enhance tensile strength by 25% and ductility by 15%.

Multiple‐Repeated Plasma Surface Treatments for Significantly Improving Bonding Performance of Metal‐Carbon‐Fiber‐Reinforced Thermoplastic Polymer Dissimilar Adhesive Joints

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Multiple plasma surface treatments improved the Mode I fracture energy of metal‐carbon‐fiber‐reinforced thermoplastic polymer (CFRTP) joints by ≈240% compared to single treatments and nearly 2000% over untreated joints. This significant enhancement, achieved without modifying CFRTP surface roughness, is attributed to improved chemical bonding at the ...

TabletGaze: Unconstrained Appearance-based Gaze Estimation in Mobile Tablets [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2015
We study gaze estimation on tablets, our key design goal is uncalibrated gaze estimation using the front-facing camera during natural use of tablets, where the posture and method of holding the tablet is not constrained. We collected the first large unconstrained gaze dataset of tablet users, labeled Rice TabletGaze dataset.

Children, parents and tablets: Preschool children's tablet use

open access: yesPegem Eğitim ve Öğretim Dergisi, 2017
The aim of this study is to examine preschoolers' tablet use and evaluate parents' opinions concerning it. To this end, the study made use of a case study design which is a means of qualitative research. The sample of the study consists of five preschoolers and their parents. The study data was gathered with observations related to preschoolers' tablet

From Nature to Engineering: Mortar Volume and Interfacial Mechanics in Bioinspired Ceramics

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by natural armors like nacre, this study explores how varying the volume fraction of the soft mortar layer impacts the interfacial strength and toughness of bioinspired ceramics. Experimental and computational analysis reveals that higher mortar volumes increase energy dissipation but reduce interfacial stiffness, offering insights for ...

Effect of Interface Style in Peer Review Comments for UML Designs [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2006
This paper presents our evaluation of using a Tablet-PC to provide peer-review comments in the first year Computer Science course. Our exploration consisted of an evaluation of how students write comments on other students' assignments using three different methods: pen and paper, a Tablet-PC, and a desktop computer. Our ultimate goal is to explore the
