The International Journal of Robotics Research, 1990
This paper has three main themes: design of a cylindrical tactile sensor, mechanical analysis using planar linear elas ticity models, and signal analysis for determining basic infor mation about the applied contact. An analysis of appropriate sensor depth has been used to allow accurate localization of contacts and reduced spatial aliasing.

Bio-inspired tactile sensing arrays
SPIE Proceedings, 2009This work presents the development of tactile sensing arrays, inspired by cutaneous sensing in humans, for the fingertips of a humanoid robot. The tactile sensing arrays have been developed in two phases. Microelectrode arrays (MEA), having 32 sensing elements - each epoxy adhered with 25μm thick piezoelectric polymer (PVDF-TrFE) film, were fabricated ...

Tactile sensing of surface features
Trends in Neurosciences, 1989The tactile recognition of an object held in the hand involves characterizing its surface features. Recent neurophysiological studies point to a number of possible ways in which tactile primary afferents convey information about surface characteristics. The spatial pattern of the afferents that are activated probably underlies the unique recognition of

Tactile sensing for telesurgery
IEE Colloquium on `Towards Telesurgery', 1995Tests have been carried out at Imperial College on a prototype master/slave system to cut soft tissue. These suggest that it is possible to recognise the moment of tissue penetration by a dip in force levels and then retract the slave automatically using local feedback to control the depth of cut.
