The effect of biting tails and having tails bitten in pigs

Physiology & Behavior, 2012
Tail-biting is a behavioral abnormality which compromises the welfare of pigs. The goal of this study was to characterize the tail-biting phenotype using behavior and measures of heart-rate (HR) and its variability (HRV) in pigs. Thirty pigs were categorized as tail-biters (n=10), tail-bite victims (n=10), and control pigs (n=10) based on the frequency

Turbo decoding with tail-biting trellises

1998 URSI International Symposium on Signals, Systems, and Electronics. Conference Proceedings (Cat. No.98EX167), 1998
Tail-biting codes are considered as component codes for parallel concatenated block codes. Based on the two-dimensional weight distribution of tail-biting codes, we calculate the minimum distance of the parallel concatenated code and give guidelines on how to choose good tail-biting component codes.

Construction of minimal tail-biting trellises

1998 Information Theory Workshop (Cat. No.98EX131), 2002
The subject of tail-biting trellis representation of block codes has attracted a lot of interest. One of the major open problems in this area is how to construct a minimal tail-biting trellis for a given linear code. We present a solution to this problem.

Tail-Biting Globally-Coupled LDPC Codes

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2019
This paper presents a new type of globally-coupled low-density parity-check (GC-LDPC) codes whose base matrix has a cyclic structure in the global part. Therefore, the resulting codes are referred to as tail-biting GC-LDPC (TB-GC-LDPC) codes. We propose two methods to construct TB GC quasi-cyclic LDPC (TB-GC-QC-LDPC) codes. For the first method, we

Tail-Biting Theory for Turbo Codes

2006 IEEE Annual Wireless and Microwave Technology Conference, 2006
In this paper, we investigate the theory of using tail-biting recursive systematic convolutional (RSC) codes in Turbo codes. Tail-biting is not always possible for a given RSC code with some length. The condition of tail-biting RSC and What length is suitable for such RSC will be studied.

Suspected white‐tail spider bite and necrotic ulcers

Internal Medicine Journal, 2004
Abstract Aim: To describe the clinical features, investigation, diagnosis and treatment of ulcers attributed to white‐tail (WT) spider bites or necrotic arachnidism. Methods: The study was a prospective case series of patients referred to the Hunter Area Toxicology Service (a tertiary referral toxicology unit servicing a population of 500 000) with an ...

An Investigation into Tail-Biting among Fattening Pigs

British Veterinary Journal, 1969
SUMMARY Tail-biting and cannibalism are not identical conditions. Cannibalism may have many causes. It can also be a sequel to tail-biting. Tail-biting implies that a single pig grabs a tail transversely in its mouth. Groups of pigs never chase a single animal as is the habit in cannibalism. From many visits to piggeries and discussions with experts

White-tailed spider bites--arachnophobic fallout?

The New Zealand medical journal, 2004
To investigate if public concern regarding the toxic effects of the bites from white-tailed spiders, Lampona cylindrata and L. murina, is reflected in the case histories of patients admitted to Christchurch Hospital with a diagnosis of spider bite. The case histories of patients admitted to Christchurch Hospital with a diagnosis of 'contact with ...
