AbstractThis study investigates lightning at tall objects and evaluates the risk of upward lightning (UL) over the eastern Alps and its surrounding areas. While uncommon, UL poses a threat, especially to wind turbines, as the long‐duration current of UL can cause significant damage.

Science in the Elementary and Middle School: Earth and Space Science Starting Points [PDF]
This chapter focuses on students' alternative conceptions of science that create a barrier to learning concepts in Earth and space science. Using specific examples of basic content and concepts addressing elementary and middle school, a strategy for ...

Difference Between 2D and 3D Development Characteristics of an Upward Lightning Leader
Tall object not only has a high probability of being struck by downward lightning, but also is easy to trigger upward lightning. Comparing with 2D optical observation, reconstructed 3D observation by dual-station optical observation can better reflect ...

ADAPTIVE HIERARCHICAL DENSE MATCHING OF MULTI-VIEW AIRBORNE OBLIQUE IMAGERY [PDF]
Traditional single-lens vertical photogrammetry can obtain object images from the air with rare lateral information of tall buildings. Multi-view airborne photogrammetry can get rich lateral texture of buildings, while the common area-based matching for ...

Monitoring the Geometry of Tall Objects in Energy Industry
The landscape shaped by the energy industry is rich in various slender structures, such as smokestacks, cooling towers, and others. It is thus becoming increasingly important to effectively monitor the geometrical condition of all types of such structures. Slender structures are deformed elastically under loads due to wind.

Initial stage in lightning initiated from tall objects and in rocket‐triggered lightning [PDF]
We examine the characteristics of the initial stage (IS) in object‐initiated lightning derived from current measurements on the Gaisberg tower (100 m, Austria), the Peissenberg tower (160 m, Germany), and the Fukui chimney (200 m, Japan) and their counterparts in rocket‐triggered lightning in Florida.

Urban analysis of the possibility of building special purpose buildings: Case study of air traffic control facility at Nikola Tesla airport in the city of Belgrade [PDF]
The practice of implementing urban plans for the construction area of the City of Belgrade has shown that in some cases they do not contain enough elements to implement directly.

Transient response of a tall object to lightning [PDF]
Experimental data showing the transient behavior of tall objects struck by lightning are reviewed. The influence of this transient behavior, illustrated by simple calculations, on measured lightning current and measured remote electromagnetic fields is discussed.

Does planning a different trajectory influence the choice of grasping points? [PDF]
We examined whether the movement path is considered when selecting the positions at which the digits will contact the object's surface (grasping points).
