Pericardial effusions are frequently found in myxedema and , when present, are asymptomatic and usually of no hemodynamic consequence. We report a patient with ascites and pericardial effusion due to myxedema who developed cardiac tamponade following abdominal paracentesis.

Malignant pericardial tamponade
Medical and Pediatric Oncology, 1990AbstractWe studied the clinical course and management of 27 patients with malignant pericardial tamponade seen in a single Medical Center over a 10 year period. Patients treated with repeat pericardial tap as their only mode of therapy had a high rate of recurrent tamponade (6 of 13 subjects) whereas most patients treated with drainage (either surgical

Acute cardiac tamponade is life threatening and requires prompt pericardial drainage. This review explains the manifestations of tamponade, including a presentation in which the diagnostic finding of pulsus paradoxus is absent, and variant forms, such as low-pressure tamponade and regional tamponade.

Rhabdomyolysis with pericardial tamponade
Annals of Emergency Medicine, 1994A young man developed an acute illness and presented to the hospital in shock. On admission, both severe rhabdomyolysis and pericardial tamponade were present, the tamponade occurring as a complication of pericarditis. Echocardiography was required for rapid diagnosis of the cardiac tamponade.
