Utilization of citrus, date, and jujube substrates for anaerobic digestion processes

open access: yesBiofuels, Bioproducts and Biorefining, Volume 18, Issue 6, Page 1917-1929, November/December 2024.
Abstract This research explores the potential for generating biogas and clean energy by processing organic waste, a process that can become a sustainable solution to Syria's energy needs. Focusing on agricultural residues generated from citrus fruit orange, date, and jujube cultivation in Syria, this study evaluates the potential for anaerobic ...

Molecular Discovery of Filarial Nematode DNA in an Endangered Wild Pinniped (Galapagos Sea Lion, Zalophus wollebaeki)

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
Our research explores to use and optimization of molecular methods for the detection and identification of DNA from filarial nematodes in Galapagos sea lion whole blood samples. We developed an accessible workflow for the genus and species‐level identifications of filarial nematodes present in wildlife DNA samples, and used this assay to test 28 ...

A study on fruit fly host range reveals the low infestation rate of Bactrocera dorsalis (Tephritidae) in Mayotte

open access: yesAgricultural and Forest Entomology, Volume 26, Issue 3, Page 314-326, August 2024.
In Mayotte, we studied fruit fly host range 5–12 years after the invasion of the world's most invasive and polyphagous pests of fruits, Bactrocera dorsalis. Surprisingly, results show low occurrence and infestation rates of B. dorsalis. Only seven host plant species were identified over the 84 collected plant species.

Using parent‐offspring pairs and trios to estimate indirect genetic effects in education

open access: yesGenetic Epidemiology, Volume 48, Issue 4, Page 190-199, June 2024.
Abstract We investigated indirect genetic effects (IGEs), also known as genetic nurture, in education with a novel approach that uses phased data to include parent‐offspring pairs in the transmitted/nontransmitted study design. This method increases the power to detect IGEs, enhances the generalizability of the findings, and allows for the study of ...

Using data on biomarkers and siblings to study early‐life economic determinants of type‐2 diabetes

open access: yesHealth Economics, Volume 33, Issue 6, Page 1266-1283, June 2024.
Abstract We study the effect of economic conditions early in life on the occurrence of type‐2 diabetes in adulthood using contextual economic indicators and within‐sibling pair variation. We use data from Lifelines: a longitudinal cohort study and biobank including 51,270 siblings born in the Netherlands from 1950 onward.

Genetic and acquired sucrase‐isomaltase deficiency: A clinical review

open access: yesJournal of Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition, Volume 78, Issue 4, Page 774-782, April 2024.
Abstract Genetic sucrase‐isomaltase deficiency (GSID) is an inherited deficiency in the ability to digest sucrose and potentially starch due to mutations in the sucrase‐isomaltase (SI) gene. Congenital sucrase‐isomaltase deficiency is historically considered to be a rare condition affecting infants with chronic diarrhea as exposure to dietary sucrose ...
