Ti3C2Tx MXene-Zirconium Diboride Based Ultra-High Temperature Ceramics. [PDF]

open access: yesAdv Sci (Weinh)
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of Ti3C2Tx MXenes as additives in ultra‐high‐temperature ceramics (ZrB₂), enhancing densification, reducing oxygen content, and improving mechanical properties. Through surfactant‐free electrostatic self‐assembly and spark plasma sintering, MXenes enabled the formation of a core–shell microstructure, resulting ...

High temperature oxidation of tantalum carbide (TaC) powder.

open access: yesJournal of Advanced Science, 1998
The high temperature oxidation of tantalum carbide (TaC) powder was investigated in order to determine the application of refractory materials for space crafts and rocket vehicles. TaC powder with an average particle size of about 10μm was used in this experiment. The samples were oxidized at 573 to 1273K for 5min to 25h in air. The weight changes were

Abnormal Structure of Tantalum Carbide Phase in WC-TaC-Co Alloys

open access: yesJournal of the Japan Society of Powder and Powder Metallurgy, 1968
The WC-TaC-Co alloys containing less than 5%TaC (sintered at 1350°C or 1400°C for lhr) were used as specimens. Their hardness, transverse-rupture strength, density and microstructures were examined, and the effects of the abnormal structure, i.e., spotty structure of tantalum carbide phase on the mechanical properties were studied.

Local Structure and Vacancy Distribution in Transition Metal Carbides: Results From High‐Resolution 13C NMR Spectroscopy

open access: yesJournal of the American Ceramic Society, Volume 109, Issue 5, May 2026.
The local carbon environment in the refractory transition metal carbides ZrC, HfC, NbC, and TaC was studied using high‐resolution magic angle spinning 13C NMR spectroscopy. Results show that carbon nuclei with next nearest neighbor vacant sites or oxygen/nitrogen impurities are distinguishable through 13C NMR, and that the technique can be used to ...

Oxygen Evolution Reaction Catalysts for Acidic‐Media CO2 Electrolyzers

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 38, Issue 19, 1 April 2026.
Acidic‐media CO2 electroreduction (CO2R) could decarbonize chemical production, despite relying on rare‐earth elements for anodic oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Transferring the learnings from mature sister technologies (water electrolysis) could accelerate technological development.

Effects of Transition Metals (TM = Nb, Ta, and Zr) on Thermodynamic and Electronic Properties of Advanced (Th1−xTMx)C (x = 0.1 and 0.2) Fuels: A First‐Principles Study

open access: yesMaterials Genome Engineering Advances, Volume 4, Issue 1, March 2026.
First‐principles study reveals Zr‐doped ThC maintains superior thermal conductivity and rigidity; Ta‐doping induces structural softening, whereas Nb enhances covalent bonding. These atomic‐scale insights guide the design of advanced thorium‐based nuclear fuels with tailored thermomechanical properties.

Exceptional Electromagnetic Wave Absorption in High‐Entropy Carbides Enabled by Lattice Distortion Engineering

open access: yesRare Metals, Volume 45, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT The growing concern over human health issues, driven by increasingly severe electromagnetic pollution from 5G communication, has made the urgent development of high‐performance electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbing materials. Although carbide‐based materials are promising because of their conductive and polarization losses, existing single ...

Mechanochemically Synthesized Transition Metal Carbide Fillers for Coating Metallic Bipolar Plates in Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

open access: yesEnergy Technology, Volume 14, Issue 1, January 2026.
Mechanochemically synthesized Cr3C2 and Mo2C, incorporated in a polyurethane‐based binder matrix, and applied to stainless steel, show the lowest contact resistance. The Cr3C2 coating provides good corrosion performance, while the Mo2C coating is unable to protect the metal from corrosion.
