Before the Tanzimat period, in the Ottoman Empire, if a non-Muslim man committed adultery with a Muslim woman, he would face a much heavier penalty than the penalty given for adultery committed by a Muslim man and a Muslim woman. A non-Muslim man accused of committing adultery with a Muslim woman would be executed.
