Characterization of 1D photonic crystal nanobeam cavities using curved microfiber [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
We investigate high-Q, small mode volume photonic crystal nanobeam cavities using a curved, tapered optical microfiber loop. The strength of the coupling between the cavity and the microfiber loop is shown to depend on the contact position on the ...

Understanding the Effects of Conductive Polymer Electrode Coating on Recorded Neural Signals

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Conductive polymer coatings are widely explored to improve the quality of signals recorded with chronically implanted neural electrodes, offering enhanced biocompatibility along with reduced electrode impedance. Combining computational modelling and data from PEDOT:PTS coated and PtIr electrodes in rats, we show that improvements in signal quality with

Effects of planform geometry on hover performance of a 2-meter-diameter model of a four-bladed rotor [PDF]

open access: yes
Hover tests were conducted on three small scale rotors to evaluate the effects of blade planform taper on rotor hover performance. Tests were conducted on a rectangular swept-tip configuration, on a configuration with a 3 to 1 taper over the outboard 20 ...

Ti6Al4V‐Bioglass‐Copper Composites for Load‐Bearing Implants

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We have designed and manufactured a novel Ti64‐based composite by adding 45S5 bioglass (BG) and copper (Cu). Adding BG on titanium improves wear resistance and biocompatibility, whereas Cu addition improves mechanical strength while providing inherent lifelong bacterial resistance.

Fabrication of a microresonator-fiber assembly maintaining a high-quality factor by CO2 laser welding

open access: yes, 2015
We demonstrate fabrication of a microtoroid resonator of a high-quality (high-Q) factor using femtosecond laser three-dimensional (3D) micromachining. A fiber taper is reliably assembled to the microtoroid using CO2 laser welding.

Biofabrication of Endothelialized, Intrinsically Vascularized 3D‐Printed Recombinant Spider Silk Scaffolds

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study evaluates 3D‐printed recombinant spider silk hydrogel eADF4(C16)‐RGD in a rat AV loop model for tissue engineering. Constructs with T17b endothelial progenitor cells showed enhanced vascularization and biodegradation. Results highlight the importance of scaffold design and cellular integration in improving vascular density and overall ...
