Does Long‐Term Lower Extremity Strength Training in Adults With Knee Osteoarthritis and Varus Alignment Reduce Knee Joint Loading During Gait?

open access: yesArthritis Care &Research, EarlyView.
Objective We examined whether 18 months of strength training in individuals with knee varus alignment and medial tibiofemoral osteoarthritis (OA) reduced knee joint loads during walking compared to an attention control group. Methods This study was a secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial that compared the effects of strength training to a ...

Nonlinear deformation of a tapered elastica cantilever due to a tip load

open access: yesArchives of Mechanics, 2013
The nonlinear large deformation of a tip loaded tapered cantilever is studied. Different cross sectional shapes, deformation directions, tapers, base inclinations and end loads are considered.

Highly efficient hybrid fiber taper coupled microsphere laser [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
A novel hybrid fiber taper is proposed and demonstrated as the coupler in a microsphere laser system. The pump wave and the laser emission, respectively, are more efficiently coupled to and from the sphere modes with this taper structure. A 980-nm pumped

Evaluation of the Potential of Laser Shock Peening Compared with Cold Expansion for Improving Fatigue Resistance of Riveted Lap Joints of Aerospace Grade 7175 Al Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser shock peening for enhancing fatigue performance of riveted aerospace aluminum joints. A comparative approach with cold expansion combines fatigue testing and synchrotron X‐ray methods. Integrating mechanical testing with residual stress and strain characterization provides insights into how different treatments affect the ...

Improvement of Electrochemical Trepanning by Using a Pictographic Insulation Sleeve

open access: yesInternational Journal of Electrochemical Science, 2017
Electrochemical trepanning is an economical approach for machining straight blades made of hard to cut materials. However, the stray corrosion caused by cathode tip in traditional electrochemical trepanning process, may introduce a tapered wall of ...

The Finance Acts 1998 and 2000: can the owners of agricultural land continue to gain from their capital disposals? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2001
This paper seeks to analyse and discuss, from the perspective of the owners of agricultural land, the main changes to the Capital Gains Tax regime introduced in the Finance Act 1998 and subsequently amended in the Finance Act 2000.

TAPER: query-aware, partition-enhancement for large, heterogenous, graphs

open access: yes, 2016
Graph partitioning has long been seen as a viable approach to address Graph DBMS scalability. A partitioning, however, may introduce extra query processing latency unless it is sensitive to a specific query workload, and optimised to minimise inter ...

The taper of cast post preparation measured using innovative image processing technique [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Background No documentation in the literature about taper of cast posts. This study was conducted to measure the degree of cast posts taper, and to evaluate its suitability based on the anatomy aspects of the common candidate teeth for post ...

Surface Tension Measurement of Ti‐6Al‐4V by Falling Droplet Method in Oxygen‐Free Atmosphere

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
In this article, the temperature‐dependent surface tension of free falling, oscillating Ti‐6Al‐4V droplets is investigated in both argon and monosilane doped, oxygen‐free atmosphere. Droplet temperature and oscillation are captured with one single high‐speed camera, and the surface tension is calculated with Rayleigh's formula.

The Impact of a Taper Impedance Transformation on the TRL De-Embedding Error

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Microwaves
This work originates from the realization that, in a transformed impedance thru-reflect-line (TRL) calibration, the sensitivity to random measurement errors is affected by impedance discrepancies between the impedance transformer and the device-under ...
