Tardigrada from Missouri

Transactions of the Kansas Academy of Science (1903-), 1985
The tardigrades Echiniscus mauccii, Macrobiotus areolatus, M. echinogenitus, M. harmsworthi, M. hufelandii, M. intermedius, M. islandicus, M. tonollii, and Milnesium tardigradum are reported from Missouri for the first time. This is the fourth record for Macrobiotus tonollii and the third one for Echiniscus mauccii in North America.

Considerations on the taxonomy of the Phylum Tardigrada.

An analysis of the taxonomy of the Tardigrada is offered, based on the latest checklist version. A total of 1167 species from 113 genera were counted, but marine species are misrepresented on account of being understudied. Moreover, many poor descriptions and synonyms remain in this constantly growing list.

Hairybacks (Gastrotricha) (Figs. 45/1–2) are microscopic organisms up to 600 µm. These bilateral animals have elongated, wormlike body. Their body surface is covered with cilia arranged in longitudinal and transverse stripes. Despite their common name cilia are more frequent on the ventral surface than on the back.
