Experiences with dormancy in tardigrades
Tardigrades often colonise extreme habitats, in which they survive using both types of dormancy: quiescence and diapause. Together with nematodes and bdelloid rotifers, tardigrades are known to enter quiescence (with several forms of cryptobiosis ...

Impacts of Land Use and Flood Regime on Zooplankton Egg Banks in a Large River Floodplain
ABSTRACT Zooplankton egg banks are crucial in rebuilding zooplankton populations in temporary water bodies when favourable conditions return after dry periods. However, their abundance, viability, and hatching success depend on many factors, with changes in land use and flooding regimes being potentially crucial drivers.

At the Edge of Survival: Exploring the Frontiers of Tardigrade Extreme Stress Tolerance
ABSTRACT Tardigrades possess extraordinary resilience to extreme environmental conditions, including near‐complete desiccation, severe levels of radiation, the vacuum of space and extreme sub‐zero temperatures. Despite significant interest in their survival strategies, the molecular mechanisms underlying their survival during extreme stresses have ...

The Polymers of Life: Exploring Cellular Function Through Polymer Concepts
Biomolecular phase separation reveals that a hidden layer of cellular organization is governed by the principles of polymer science. This review bridges polymer physics and cell biology, offering a primer on fundamental concepts, proposing a framework for interrogating cellular function, and synthesizing biophysical methods for decoding macromolecular ...

ParaHox Genes Revisited: From Gut Patterning to Integrated Axial and Neural Organization in Rotifera
In rotifers, ParaHox genes show a dispersed genomic organization, with Xlox absent across gnathiferans. Exclusive neuronal expression of Gsx and Cdx reveals that ancestral ParaHox genes coordinated neural and epithelial development beyond gut patterning, suggesting an integrated role in early bilaterian body plan organization.

An Integrated Assessment of European Soil Health and Restoration Potential
ABSTRACT Soils host a significant proportion of biodiversity on Earth providing ecosystem functions vital to human well‐being, making it imperative to include them and their ecological features when addressing sustainability goals. We performed a comprehensive assessment of soil health across Europe by explicitly integrating biotic and abiotic ...

Toxicity and Immunogenicity of a Tardigrade Cytosolic Abundant Heat Soluble Protein in Mice
Tardigrades are microscopic animals well-known for their stress tolerance, including the ability to survive desiccation. This survival requires cytosolic abundant heat soluble (CAHS) proteins.

The ecological niche concept is fundamental to understanding species distributions but often overlooks the demographic processes shaping said distributions. Conversely, demographic theory has traditionally neglected how vital rates vary and covary across environments, limiting our understanding of population dynamics across species' ranges.

Assessment of Preservation and Extraction Methods for Environmental DNA in Sediments
We assessed how different preservation methods (freezing, room temperature, silica gel, Longmire buffer) affect eDNA metabarcoding results for bacterial, fungal, microeukaryotic, and metazoan communities in marine and freshwater sediments. Results demonstrate taxonomic‐ and habitat‐specific responses to preservation methods, providing evidence‐based ...
