Task difficulty modulates brain activation in the emotional oddball task [PDF]
Previous functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have reported that task-irrelevant, emotionally salient events can disrupt target discrimination, particularly when attentional demands are low, while others demonstrate alterations in the distracting effects of emotion in behavior and neural activation in the context of attention-demanding ...

Attentional effort modulated by task difficulty
It has been assumed that stimulus discrimination in a visual task is performed with fixed attentive effort. Here we show that attention to the same pair of stimuli can be modulated by varying the task difficulty when a task requires the discrimination of only a small number of different stimuli.

Decision time, subjective probability, and task difficulty [PDF]
This study analyzed the relationships between decision time, subjective probability, and task difficulty in the context of a probability assessment task involving memory search. The results indicate that decision time and subjective probability do not yield identical functions. Also, decision time increases as subjective task difficulty increases.

Difficulty suppressing visual distraction while dual tasking
AbstractHuman beings must often perform multiple tasks concurrently or in rapid succession. Laboratory research has revealed striking limitations in the ability to dual task by asking participants to identify two target objects that are inserted into a rapid stream of irrelevant items. Under a variety of conditions, identification of the second target (

Neural Correlates of Motor Skill Learning Are Dependent on Both Age and Task Difficulty
Although a general age-related decline in neural plasticity is evident, the effects of age on neural plasticity after motor practice are inconclusive.

Semantic indeterminacy in object relative clauses [PDF]
This article examined whether semantic indeterminacy plays a role in comprehension of complex structures such as object relative clauses. Study 1 used a gated sentence completion task to assess which alternative interpretations are dominant as the ...

Predicting Search Task Difficulty [PDF]
Search task difficulty refers to a user's assessment about the amount of effort required to complete a search task. Our goal in this work is to learn predictive models of search task difficulty. We evaluate features derived from the user's interaction with the search engine as well as features derived from the user's level of interest in the task and ...

Motivational influences of task difficulty information on task effort
Two studies were conducted to investigate the motivational influences of information about task difficulty on task effort. In both studies, an anagram task was used as the experimental task and task motivation was measured with rating scales. In experiment 1, 60 participants were presented anagrams labeled as “easy” or “difficult”, both of which were ...
