Taylor–Couette flow for astrophysical purposes

open access: yesPhilosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A: Mathematical, Physical and Engineering Sciences, 2023
A concise review is given of astrophysically motivated experimental and theoretical research on Taylor–Couette flow. The flows of interest rotate differentially with the inner cylinder faster than the outer, but are linearly stable against Rayleigh’s inviscid centrifugal instability.

Ultimate Turbulent Taylor-Couette Flow [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2012
The flow structure of strongly turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with Reynolds numbers up to Re_i = 2*10^6 of the inner cylinder is experimentally examined with high-speed particle image velocimetry (PIV). The wind Reynolds numbers Re_w of the turbulent Taylor-vortex flow is found to scale as Re_w ~ Ta^(1/2), exactly as predicted for the ultimate ...

Subcritical Equilibria in Taylor-Couette Flow [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
Nonlinear equilibrium states characterized by strongly localized vortex pairs are calculated in the linearly stable parameter region of counterrotating Taylor-Couette flow. These subcritical states are rotating waves whose region of existence is consistent with the critical threshold for relaminarization observed in experiments.

Investigation of transient multiphase Taylor-Couette flow

open access: yesAlexandria Engineering Journal, 2022
A multiphase, transient, horizontal, Taylor-Couette flow has been investigated numerically. This flow governs thermal performance of self-contained drum motor (SCDM) drive systems.

Intensification of Heat Sterilization Process for Liquid Foods using Taylor-Couette Flow System

open access: yesChemical Engineering Transactions, 2017
Heat sterilization are widely used in almost all food manufacturing areas. For heat sterilization of liquid foods which has high viscosity and shear-thinning property, Taylor-Couette (TC) flow system having two coaxial cylinders is applied in this study,

Experimental and numerical investigation on mixing and axial dispersion in Taylor-Couette flow patterns [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Taylor-Couette flows between two concentric cylinders have great potential applications in chemical engineering. They are particularly convenient for two-phase small scale devices enabling solvent extraction operations.

Slit wall aspect ratio effect on the stability and heat transfer characteristics of Taylor-Couette flow

open access: yesResults in Physics, 2017
Taylor-Couette flow in the annulus was investigated by numerical simulation. The stability of Taylor-Couette flow and its heat transfer process of four different models were studied.

Bubbly Turbulent Drag Reduction Is a Boundary Layer Effect [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
In turbulent Taylor-Couette flow, the injection of bubbles reduces the overall drag. On the other hand, rough walls enhance the overall drag. In this work, we inject bubbles into turbulent Taylor-Couette flow with rough walls (with a Reynolds number up ...

Scalable Exfoliation of Bulk MoS2 to Single- and Few-Layers Using Toroidal Taylor Vortices

open access: yesNanomaterials, 2018
The production of a large amount of high-quality transition metal dichalcogenides is critical for their use in industrial applications. Here, we demonstrate the scalable exfoliation of bulk molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) powders into single- or few-layer ...

Direct numerical simulation of the Taylor–Couette flow with the asymmetric end-wall boundary conditions

open access: yesArchives of Mechanics, 2016
In the paper the authors present the results obtained during a direct numerical simulation of the transitional Taylor–Couette flow in closed cavity. The spectral vanishing viscosity method is used to stabilize computations for higher Reynolds numbers ...
