Tear break‐up time: clinical procedures and their effects

Ophthalmic and Physiological Optics, 1998
SummaryThree successive (representative) values of fluorescein‐instillation TBUT (tear break‐up time) were obtained from a group of young Hong Kong (HK)‐Chinese. The median TBUT1, TBUT2 and TBUT3 were 3.2, 3.8 and 4.5 sec, respectively. Wilcoxon signed‐rank tests showed that TBUT1 was significantly different from TBUT2 and TBUT3, but there was no ...

Review of the Tear Break-Up Time and a Closer Look at the Tear Break-Up Time of Hong Kong Chinese

Optometry and Vision Science, 1993
The technique of assessing tear stability using the fluorescein instillation technique has been widely used in the clinical diagnosis of "dry eye" and in the screening of potential contact lens wearers. Various inconsistencies in the application of the tear break-up time (TBUT) techniques and the results obtained were noted in the literature and this ...

The Relation between Invasive and Noninvasive Tear Break-Up Time

Optometry and Vision Science, 1995
TBUT and NITBUT (tear break-up time and noninvasive tear break-up time, respectively) were measured on four groups of subjects from different countries (two groups of Caucasians, two groups of Chinese). No significant difference was found in either TBUT or NITBUT values among the four groups of subjects.

Correlation of Non-invasive Tear Break-Up Time with Tear Osmolarity and Other Invasive Tear Function Tests

Seminars in Ophthalmology, 2020
Aim: To compare the outcomes of non-invasive break-up time (NI-BUT) test and the other conventional dry eye tests. Methods: The right eyes of 170 subjects were included in the study. In order to evaluate the tear quality of the patients, NI-BUT levels were measured by the Scheimplug-Placido disk system (Sirius topography).

Evaluation of Tear Film Interference Patterns and Measures of Tear Break-Up Time

Optometry and Vision Science, 2002
The purpose of this study was to compare the agreement within and between examiners when evaluating real-time and digital photographs of TearScope Plus tear film interference patterns. We also evaluated between-examiner agreement of noninvasive digital tear break-up time (NITBUT) using the TearScope, the relation between NITBUT and tear film ...

Automation of the tear film break-up time test

Proceedings of the 4th International Symposium on Applied Sciences in Biomedical and Communication Technologies, 2011
The Break-Up Time test (BUT) evaluates the quality and stability of the tear film. It is used for the diagnosis of the dry eye syndrome, a widespread disease in the developed world. This paper describes an automatic methodology to evaluate the BUT test. This methodology locates the different measurement areas from a video of the tear film, extracts the

Schirmer tear test values and tear film break‐up times in cats with conjunctivitis

Veterinary Ophthalmology, 2005
AbstractObjectives (1) To document tear film break‐up time (TFBUT) in a group of cats with conjunctivitis; (2) to determine if TFBUTs from cats with conjunctivitis vary significantly from previously established normal values for TFBUT in young cats without ocular disease; (3) to determine if a correlation exists between Schirmer tear test (STT) values ...

The influence of religious fasting on basal tear secretion and tear break-up time

International Ophthalmology, 1998
Muslims abstain from food and drink from dawn to sunset during the holy month of Ramadan. An extended strict fasting may influence tear secretion and quality. We investigated changes in basal tear secretion (BTS) and tear break-up time (BUT) at the beginning and at the end of fasting on 32 healthy male patients with a mean age of 22.3 +/- 2.9 years ...

Manual interferometric device for routine non-invasive tear film break-up time assessment

Seminars in Ophthalmology, 2021
Purpose: To determine the feasibility of non-invasive tear break-up time (NIBUT) assessment using the Handheld tear lipid layer thickness assessment instrument and compare it with the standard tear break-up time (TBUT) test and other dry eye tests.Subjects and methods: 108 subjects were enrolled, 56 with and 52 without dry eye symptoms.

Tear break‐up time is related to blink frequency

Acta Ophthalmologica, 1991
Abstract The relationship between tear break‐up time and blink frequency was investigated in a group of 41 subjects. A significant relationship between tear breakup time and blinking was found. This suggests that tear stability plays an important role in stimulating normal involuntary blinking.
