Reliability of the Tear Break-Up Time Technique of Assessing Tear Stability and the Locations of the Tear Break-Up in Hong Kong Chinese

Optometry and Vision Science, 1992
The measurement of tear break-up time (TBUT) in assessing stability of the tear film is somewhat controversial, even though the technique is widely used. We examined reliability of the technique within and among examiners and conclude that measurements of TBUT can be made reliably; full-beam observation of the cornea is preferable to scanning the ...

The non-invasive tear film break-up time in normal children

British Journal of Ophthalmology, 2013
To perform an objective evaluation of the non-invasive tear break-up time (NITBUT) and lipid layer interferometry in normal children.Children with no known ocular surface disease or anterior segment abnormality were evaluated. We excluded patients with disorders affecting lid margins or tear film composition.

Tear Film Break-up Time Evaluated by Real-Time Hartmann-Shack Wavefront Sensing

Japanese Journal of Ophthalmology, 2006
To develop a novel method for measuring tear break-up time (BUT) by continuously measuring higher order wavefront aberrations using a Hartmann-Shack (H-S) aberrometer.Wavefront aberrations up to the sixth order for a 4-mm pupil were measured in six eyes of six normal subjects using an H-S aberrometer. The aberrometry was performed once every second for

Thermographic evaluation of tear film break-up time to study tear film stability

International Journal of Thermal Sciences, 2016
Abstract Tear film instability is one of the major characteristics of dry eye syndrome. However, traditional diagnostic method like fluorescein tear film break-up time (FTBUT) test is limited by its invasiveness, the necessity to use fluorescein sodium and thus variable result.

Capsaicin-induced pain sensitivity in short tear break-up time dry eye

The Ocular Surface, 2020
To evaluate transient receptor potential vanilloid 1 (TRPV1)-mediated pain sensitivity in patients with short tear break-up time (TBUT) dry eye (DE) by using the capsaicin stimulus test. This prospective cross-sectional comparative study included 22 eyes of 22 patients with short TBUT DE and 11 eyes of 11 non-DE control subjects.

Non invasive tear film break‐up time and blinking

Acta Ophthalmologica, 2012
AbstractPurpose The break‐up time of the tear film for evaluation of dry eyes is performed with fluorescein in blue light of the slit lamp. Errors may occure by the observer and has to be repeated for accurat results. The BUT can also be seen with a Keratograph 4 (KG‐BUT). In this pilot‐study we want to evaluate the measurements with KG‐BUT in patients

[Tear film break-up time with different stains].

Klinische Monatsblatter fur Augenheilkunde, 1983
The tear film break-up time is usually measured with the lacrimal fluid stained with fluorescein. With the staining methods currently recommended the break-up time is difficult to reproduce. In the study described here, the break-up times with different staining methods were compared.

The effect of tear substitutes on tear film break-up time.

Investigative ophthalmology, 1975
Twelve commercial artificial tear solutions and a newly developed one were evaluated as to their effect on tear film breakup time (BUT) in ten normal subjects. Instillation of one drop of these solutions altered the BUT in such a way that serial BUT measurements could be used as an index of retention time.

Study of tear film flow and break up time (BUT) in trachoma

Acta Ophthalmologica, 1986
Abstract Tear film flow and stability studies were carried out in patients suffering from cicatrizing trachoma by Schirmer test I and tear film break‐up‐time (BUT) measurements, respectively. Both Schirmer test I and BUT values were decreased significantly (t‐test, P < 0.001) depicting aqueous as well as mucin deficiency and hence, an unstable tear ...
