External Validation of an Automated Surgical Step Recognition Model for Robotic Distal Gastrectomy (RDG) Using a Multicenter Dataset

open access: yesAnnals of Gastroenterological Surgery, EarlyView.
Our present study reveals that surgical step recognition performs moderately well when trained on video data from a single institution and applied to an external institution's data. Nevertheless, our model substantially improves its prediction capabilities when trained on the same amount of data from multiple institutions.

Predicting High‐Resolution Spatial and Spectral Features in Mass Spectrometry Imaging with Machine Learning and Multimodal Data Fusion

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A multimodal fusion pipeline predicts high‐resolution ion distributions in imaging mass spectrometry by integrating Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance, time‐of‐flight matrix‐assisted laser desorption/ionization, and time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry data.

Automation of Surgical Workflow Recognition: Unveiling the Surgical Instrument Kinematics that Underly Robot‐Assisted Prostatectomy Procedures

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
Automated procedural analysis is recognized as one of the major game changers for robotic surgery. Meaning digital analysis needs to replace the manual assessments that set todays standard. Mechanical robotic‐instrument tracking enables the derivation of quantitative kinematic metrics that support behavior‐based workflow segmentation into distinct ...

Enhanced Actuation Stress in Variable Stiffness Liquid Crystal Elastomers

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
Liquid crystal elastomers (LCEs) filled with low‐melting‐point alloy particles exhibit a fivefold increase in actuation stress and tunable stiffness. At low filler concentrations, mechanically enhanced network entropy boosts force output, while higher concentrations enable variable stiffness. This composite design mimics muscle‐like behavior, advancing

Small but Strong: Lightweight Architecture Improves Lung Nodule Detection and Segmentation

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
(a) Separated network architecture, where the lung nodule detection and segmentation networks are separated. (b) Separated head architecture, where an anchor‐based head is responsible for detection and another head for segmentation. (c) The study's architecture, containing a lightweight backbone network based on deformable Transformer for feature ...
