Investigation on hard‐rock breaking performance and auxiliary mechanism of picks assisted with both‐sided high‐pressure water jets

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper investigates the high‐pressure water jet‐pick combined rock‐breaking mode (HPC), which employs high‐pressure water jets to precut grooves on both sides of the picks. The rock‐breaking patterns and performance of the HPC method are obtained, and the auxiliary rock‐breaking mechanism of water jet grooving is revealed.

Continental breakup and UHP rock exhumation in action: GPS results from the Woodlark Rift, Papua New Guinea [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
We show results from a network of campaign Global Positioning System (GPS) sites in the Woodlark Rift, southeastern Papua New Guinea, in a transition from seafloor spreading to continental rifting. GPS velocities indicate anticlockwise rotation (at 2–2.7°

Generalized Matsuoka–Nakai criterion considering hydrostatic pressure dependence in the brittle–ductile region

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Three sets of strength data were selected, including hydrostatic pressure independent within the brittle region (HPI‐B), hydrostatic pressure dependent within the brittle region (HPD‐B), and hydrostatic pressure dependent within the brittle–ductile region (HPD‐BD). For HPI type, the failure envelope within the deviatoric plane remains constant.

Climate and Tectonic Forcing of Depositional Evolution in the Southern North China Basin Since ∼3 Ma

open access: yesGeochemistry, Geophysics, Geosystems
Marginal basins provide sensitive yet incomplete records of climate and tectonic forcing, and the southern North China Basin provides an ideal setting to decode these interactions since the late Pliocene.

Stratigraphy, facies and geodynamic settings of Jurassic formations in the Bükk Mountains, North Hungary: its relations with the other areas of the Neotethyan realm. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Jurassic mélange complexes related to the subduction of the Neotethys Ocean occur in the Bükk Mountains, North Hungary. This paper characterizes the sedimentary sequence of basin and slope facies that occur in the southwestern part of the Bükk ...

Experimental study on burning rate and flame geometry in construction tunnel fires under high geothermal conditions

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Abstract As tunnel construction advances in lengths and depths, the construction of tunnels in high geothermal environments has become increasingly common, raising significant fire risks. In this study, a 1:20 scale model tunnel test platform was constructed to investigate the effects of a high geothermal environment on fire behavior in tunnels during ...

Tectonic setting of Martian volcanoes and deep-seated intrusives [PDF]

open access: yes
More than 50 volcanoes have been mapped on Mars, and recent geologic studies indicate structural evidence of deep seated intrusive bodies. Most volcanoes in the Tharsis region are volcanotectonic features; they have been associated with large scale ...
