Tectonic stress in the southwestern Arabian shield
Engineering Geology, 1986Abstract Studies of dam sites in the southwestern region of Saudi Arabia gave the opportunity to undertake an in-depth study of the old basement of the Arabian shield. By comparing the results obtained at all scales (seismicity, fracturing of the shield, data on overall tectonics and in-situ measurements) it has been possible to formulate an ...

Stress measurements and tectonic implications for Fennoscandia
Tectonophysics, 1991Abstract The main results from the Fennoscandian Rock Stress Data Base (FRSDB) are presented. Rock stress data from Sweden are now being selected to enter the data base of the World Stress Map Project of the International Lithosphere Programme. It is suggested that ridge push from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the major stress-generating mechanism.

Tectonic stress field in the Indian subcontinent
Journal of Geophysical Research: Solid Earth, 1992A map of maximum horizontal compressive stress orientation in the Indian subcontinent has been prepared using orientations derived from three different stress indicators: borehole elongation breakouts, in situ hydraulic fracturing measurements, and earthquake focal mechanisms. Most part of the subcontinent appears to be characterized by a compressional

Mapping Tectonic Stress Using Earthquakes
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2005An earthquakes occurs when the forces acting on a fault overcome its intrinsic strength and cause it to slip abruptly. Understanding more specifically why earthquakes occur at particular locations and times is complicated because in many cases we do not know what these forces actually are, or indeed what processes ultimately trigger slip.

Stress variability and brittle tectonic structures
Earth-Science Reviews, 2005The problem of stress variability, both in space and time, during brittle deformation of rocks is faced in this note. Several possible causes of the temporal and spatial variations of the stress tensor are reviewed and discussed. A genetic partitioning of the stress tensor is proposed, showing that any stress field within a crustal volume can be seen ...

Tectonic stress field in East Eurasia
Physics of the Earth and Planetary Interiors, 1983Abstract The overall pattern of the recent tectonic stress field in the eastern part of the Eurasian plate is inferred from the geological features of large transcurrent and reverse faults, graben structures and from focal mechanism solutions of shallow earthquakes. NE-SW striking trajectory lines, of maximum horizontal tectonic stress axis (σ Hmax),
