Numerical Study on the Prediction of “Sweet Spots” in a Low Efficiency-Tight Gas Sandstone Reservoir Based on a 3D Strain Energy Model

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
The study of the construction of a micro-scale rupture parameter from the perspective of rock stress and strain is a frontier in geoscience. The strain energy density (U) can quantitatively characterize the probability of internal micro-scale ruptures in

What’s Shakin’? Ladra v. New Dominion, LLC: A Case of Consequence for the Hydraulic Fracturing Industry and Those Affected by Induced Seismicity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
This analysis is accompanied by a study of a 2015 ruling of the Supreme Court of Oklahoma, Ladra v. New Dominion, LLC. The case considered the possibility of a private tort action by homeowners against the operators of injection wells proceeding within ...

Resonance‐induced restoration of rock permeability degraded by heavy components of crude oil

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Resonance‐induced changes occur in filtration properties of sedimentary rocks in crude paraffin oil flow under acoustic vibrations. Experimental data on (a) pressure drop; (b) permeability; (c) pressure at the rock inlet; and (d) pressure at the rock outlet are presented.

Mechanical Response of Soft Rock Roadways in Deep Coal Mines Under Tectonic Stress and Surrounding Rock Control Measures

open access: yesApplied Sciences
This study focuses on how rocks respond mechanically and how to keep them stable when soft rock roadways are under deep tectonic stress. It does this through a combination of theoretical analysis, numerical simulations, and field applications. We created

Tectonic evolution of a continental collision zone: A thermomechanical numerical model [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
We model evolution of a continent-continent collision and draw some parallels with the tectonic evolution of the Himalaya. We use a large-scale visco-plasto-elastic thermomechanical model that has a free upper surface, accounts for erosion and deposition

Earthquakes: from chemical alteration to mechanical rupture

open access: yes, 1998
In the standard rebound theory of earthquakes, elastic deformation energy is progressively stored in the crust until a threshold is reached at which it is suddenly released in an earthquake.

Rockburst prediction based on data preprocessing and hyperband‐RNN‐DNN

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
A data preprocessing workflow is proposed to address challenges in rockburst data analysis. Coupled algorithms preprocess the data set, and hyperband optimization is used to enhance RNN performance. Results show that preprocessing improves accuracy, while dense layers enhance model stability and prediction performance.

Gravitational field models for study of Earth mantle dynamics [PDF]

open access: yes
The tectonic forces or stresses due to the small scale mantle flow under the South American plate are detected and determined by utilizing the harmonics of the geopotential field model.

Failure characteristics and the energy criterion of rock with a through‐going joint under true‐triaxial unloading conditions: Insights from the DEM model

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The rock failure mode is significantly influenced by the contributing factors, such as the joint inclination, the initial confining pressure, and the unloading point. We found six typical rock failure modes after a large number of numerical tests. Abstract Excavation unloading damages rock masses, with preferential failure along geological defects in ...
