Experimental and constitutive modeling investigations on marble in Jinping Underground Laboratory

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
The objective of this study is to reveal the underlying mechanisms behind the brittle‐ductile transition of the marble through a combination of experimental research and constitutive modeling. A series of triaxial compression and triaxial cyclic loading tests are conducted.

Global Patterns of Tectonism on Titan from Mountain Chains and Virgae [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
This research is based on the exploration of tectonic patterns on Titan from a global perspective. Several moons in the outer solar system display patterns of surface tectonic features that imply global stress fields driven or modified by global forces ...

A novel construction approach for the pore structure model principally focuses on the controllable roundness of rock particles

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
Particle rounding effects comparison of different methods: (a), (b), and (c) are the rounding results using the B‐spline curve method with different R; (d), (e), and (f) are the results of vertex rounding substitution method with different rounding radii.

Strain‐based modeling and analysis for rock blasting and geomechanics applications

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This paper introduces a novel strain‐based modeling approach for blasting and geomechanical applications, using measurable variables like particle velocity, strain, and displacement. By bypassing complex constitutive relations, strain‐based models capture critical blasting trends and full‐blast design parameters with minimal calibration.

Breather-type oscillations of the global tectonic shear stress fields

open access: yesJournal of Structural Geology, 2020
Abstract In this paper, two observations of the breather-type oscillating tectonic shear stress field in the Earth's crust are described. The normalized tectonic shear stress from the regional earthquake focal mechanisms is calculated by using the modified moment tensor summation method.

Anomalous surface waves from Lop Nor nuclear explosions: Observations and numerical modeling [PDF]

open access: yes, 1998
Surface waves from the Chinese test site of Lop Nor are analyzed using long-period and broadband stations located at regional and teleseismic distances and at different azimuths. For most azimuths, strong Love waves between 0.02 and 0.045 Hz are observed

Probability prediction of true‐triaxial compressive strength of intact rocks based on the improved PSO‐RVM model

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
In this work, we propose an improved particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and develop an improved PSO‐relevance vector machine (RVM) model as a substitute for traditional true‐triaxial testing. The model's high prediction accuracy was validated through comparisons with two other machine learning methods and five three‐dimensional Hoek–Brown type

Prediction of Structural Fracture Distribution and Analysis of Controlling Factors in a Passive Continental Margin Basin—An Example of a Clastic Reservoir in Basin A, South America

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Structural fracture distribution is essential in oil and gas transportation and development in passive continental margin basins. In this paper, taking as an example the clastic reservoirs in the A-Basin, a passive continental margin in northeastern ...

Geological constraints for a conceptual evolutionary model of the slope deformations affecting Mt. Nuovo at Ischia (Italy) [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
ischia island was the scenario of several Holocene slope in- stability events occurred at different scales, from shallow mass movements, triggered by meteo-climatic forcing, up to massive rock slope failures such as large debris avalanches these last ...

Mechanical property variation mechanisms of granite subjected to real‐time high temperatures and subsequent cooling treatment

open access: yesDeep Underground Science and Engineering, EarlyView.
This study investigates the coupled thermo‐mechanical behavior of granite during heating and cooling through a combination of laboratory tests and finite element analysis. The thermal conductivity, mineral composition, mass loss rate, micro‐crack observation, and thermal fracture characteristics of granite under various temperature conditions are ...
