Near‐term ecological forecasting for dynamic aeroconservation of migratory birds

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 6, Page 1777-1786, December 2021., 2021
Abstract Near‐term ecological forecasting has the potential to mitigate negative impacts of human modifications on wildlife by directing efficient action through relevant and timely predictions. We used the U.S. avian migration system to highlight ecological forecasting applications for aeroconservation.

Identifying the possibilities and pitfalls of conducting IUCN Red List assessments from remotely sensed habitat information based on insights from poorly known Cuban mammals

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 5, Page 1598-1614, October 2021., 2021
Abstract The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species (RLS) is the key global tool for objective, repeatable assessment of species’ extinction risk status, and plays an essential role in tracking biodiversity loss and guiding conservation action.

Protecting biodiversity and economic returns in resource‐rich tropical forests

open access: yesConservation Biology, Volume 35, Issue 1, Page 263-273, February 2021., 2021
Abstract In pursuit of socioeconomic development, many countries are expanding oil and mineral extraction into tropical forests. These activities seed access to remote, biologically rich areas, thereby endangering global biodiversity. We examined how protection of biodiversity and economic revenues can be balanced in biologically valuable regions ...

Reverse diel vertical movements of oceanic manta rays off the northern coast of Peru and implications for conservation

open access: yesEcological Solutions and Evidence, Volume 2, Issue 1, January–March 2021., 2021
Manta photo supplied by Stephanie Venables Recovered satellite tags revealed fine‐scale reverse diel vertical movements of oceanic manta rays in the coastal and highly stratified waters of northern Peru. Movements appeared to be driven by a strategy of foraging and thermal recovery.

Tracking Small Animals in Complex Landscapes: A Comparison of Localisation Workflows for Automated Radio Telemetry Systems. [PDF]

open access: yesEcol Evol
Automated radio telemetry grids provide the possibility of studying movement of small animals at very fine spatial scales, but the influence of rugged terrains and vegetation on localisation error curtails the applicability of this technology. In this study, we present a comparative workflow to reduce error and show how selecting higher radio signal ...

Evaluation of Maternal Penning to Improve Calf Survival in the Chisana Caribou Herd Évaluation des Enclos de Maternité pour Améliorer la Survie des Faons du Troupeau de Caribous Chisana

open access: yesWildlife Monographs, Volume 204, Issue 1, Page 5-46, August 2019., 2019
ABSTRACT Predation is a major limiting factor for most small sedentary caribou (Rangifer tarandus) populations, particularly those that are threatened or endangered across the southern extent of the species’ range. Thus, reducing predation impacts is often a management goal for improving the status of small caribou populations, and lethal predator ...
