Predictive processing's flirt with transcendental idealism

open access: yesNoûs, EarlyView.
Abstract The popular predictive processing (PP) framework posits prediction error minimization (PEM) as the sole mechanism in the brain that can account for all mental phenomena, including consciousness. I first highlight three ambitions associated with major presentations of PP: (1) Completeness (PP aims for a comprehensive account of mental phenomena)

Drying suppresses fine root production to 1 m depths and alters root traits in four distinct tropical forests

open access: yesNew Phytologist, EarlyView.
Summary Drying and drought in tropical forests, which have some of the highest net primary productivity on Earth, are likely to alter root dynamics, ecosystem function, and carbon (C) storage. We used a chronic drying experiment in four lowland Panamanian forests to investigate whether soil drying shifts tropical forest root production from surface to ...

Potential Contributions of Edible Oil and Wheat Flour Fortification on Reducing Inadequate Micronutrient Intake in Ethiopia

open access: yesAnnals of the New York Academy of Sciences, EarlyView.
In 2022, Ethiopia mandated wheat flour and edible oil fortification to address micronutrient deficiencies. Using 2015/16 consumption data, this study modeled potential contributions, estimating that fortification could reduce inadequate intake risk by 44%, varying by nutrient, region, and socioeconomic status.

The PtrC2H2.2‐6‐PtrCYP86A7/A8 Module Regulates Poplar Drought Tolerance Through Mediating Cutin and Wax Biosynthesis Pathways

open access: yesPlant Biotechnology Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The plant cuticle, composed of cutin and wax, is crucial for reducing non‐stomatal water loss and enhancing drought tolerance. CYP86A genes are key regulators of cutin and wax biosynthesis, yet the mechanisms controlling their expression remain unclear.

Xylem Pit Anatomy and Minimum Leaf Conductance Drive Drought Mortality in Pinus pinaster

open access: yesPlant, Cell &Environment, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Drought‐triggered forest die‐off events are commonly attributed to hydraulic failure, carbon starvation, or a combination of the two. Nevertheless, the anatomical and physiological traits that make trees vulnerable to drought in the field are often unknown, hindering predictive efforts.
