Renaissance Studies, EarlyView.ABSTRACT Gabriel Grisley, a German physician, came to Portugal and founded a garden near the Xabregas River in Lisbon, during the 1610s under the Spanish kings' rule. In view of the utility a botanic garden represented for the kingdom, he was able to obtain a royal privilege from King João IV during the Restauration War against the Spanish (1640–1668).

Increasing Respiration Weakens the Carbon Sink Over Two Decades in a Temperate Deciduous Forest
Global Change Biology Communications, Volume 1, Issue 3, September 2026.Using a 20‐year eddy covariance record from a temperate deciduous forest, we show that net carbon uptake declined over two decades. Both the trend and interannual variability in net carbon exchange were respiration driven, with warming winters and increasing late‐summer diffuse light driving the trend in respiration.
