Mapping the murine TMJ glenoid fossa over development, homeostasis and in response to disease

open access: yesJournal of Anatomy, Volume 249, Issue 1, Page 85-96, July 2026.
The fibrocartilage of the murine glenoid fossa and condyle of the temporomandibular joint are shown to form at distinct times with distinct molecular identities. Changes in the condyle during disease lead to remodelling of the fossa to maintain joint alignment.

The deep belly of the temporalis muscle: an anatomical, histological and MRI study.

open access: yes, 2005
In order to achieve a better functional and clinical knowledge of a masticatory muscle called the sphenomandibularis that is suspected to be responsible for headaches by compressing the maxillary nerve, bilateral dissections of the infratemporal fossa ...

Comorbid Insomnia and Sleep‐Disordered Breathing in Painful Temporomandibular Disorders: Association With Pain Intensity

open access: yesJournal of Oral Rehabilitation, Volume 53, Issue 7, Page 1249-1258, July 2026.
In 50 adults with chronic TMD pain, insomnia alone and COMISA showed similar pain intensity and subjective sleep complaints. However, COMISA was characterised by greater pain frequency, predominant morning pain and marked nocturnal hypoxemia. Sleep quality and oxygen saturation were associated with pain intensity only in COMISA, indicating that sleep ...

Whole‐Body Pattern of Muscle Degeneration and Progression in Sarcoglycanopathies

open access: yesAnnals of Clinical and Translational Neurology, Volume 13, Issue 6, Page 1129-1140, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Objective To characterize whole‐body intramuscular fat distribution pattern in patients with sarcoglycanopathies and explore correlations with disease severity, duration and age at onset. Methods Retrospective, cross‐sectional, multicentric study enrolling patients with variants in one of the four sarcoglycan genes who underwent whole‐body ...

Novel application of gamification to support undergraduate anatomy: Student perceptions and performance

open access: yesAnatomical Sciences Education, Volume 19, Issue 6, Page 876-890, June 2026.
Abstract Anatomy is a foundational component of various medical and paramedical disciplines. Existing research has suggested that games or game elements can improve student interest in musculoskeletal (MSK) anatomy. This project builds on previous gamification and serious game work and incorporates new anatomy‐based games into undergraduate anatomy ...

How the anterior, middle and posterior portions of the temporalis muscle work during mastication

open access: yes, 2015
Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate mean electrical activity and how the anterior, middle, and posterior portions of the temporalis muscle work during mastication. Methods: The sample consisted of 16 healthy male college freshmen trichotomized,

Beyond mammals: the evolution of chewing and other forms of oropharyngeal food processing in vertebrates

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 3, Page 1406-1462, June 2026.
ABSTRACT Oropharyngeal food processing exhibits a remarkable diversity among vertebrates, reflecting the evolution of specialised ‘processing centres’ associated with the mandibular, hyoid, and branchial arches. Although studies have detailed various food‐processing strategies and mechanisms across vertebrates, a coherent and comprehensive terminology ...
