Chiral Engineered Biomaterials: New Frontiers in Cellular Fate Regulation for Regenerative Medicine

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Chiral engineered biomaterials can selectively influence cell behaviors in regenerative medicine. This review covers chiral engineered biomaterials in terms of their fabrication methods, cellular response mechanisms, and applications in directing stem cell differentiation and tissue function.

The current status of various preclinical therapeutic approaches for tendon repair

open access: yesAnnals of Medicine
Tendons are fibroblastic structures that link muscle and bone. There are two kinds of tendon injuries, including acute and chronic. Each form of injury or deterioration can result in significant pain and loss of tendon function.

Soft Pneumatic Device Designed to Mimic the Periosteal Environment for Regulating the Fate of Mesenchymal Stem Cells

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This study presents a custom‐made soft pneumatic device (SPD) that mimics complex mechanical forces and fluid flow to enhance in vitro cell differentiation. It shows that low mechanotransduction promotes MSC differentiation into osteoprogenitor cells, while high mechanotransduction causes structural disruptions and cell detachment, providing new ...

Monitoring Achilles tendon healing progress in ultrasound imaging with convolutional neural networks [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Achilles tendon rupture is a debilitating injury, which is typically treated with surgical repair and long-term rehabilitation. The recovery, however, is protracted and often incomplete. Diagnosis, as well as healing progress assessment, are largely based on ultrasound and magnetic resonance imaging.

Use of Posterior Hamstring Harvest During Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction in the Pediatric and Adolescent Population. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
Background:Posterior hamstring harvest has been described in the adult population in a limited fashion, but no study is available describing the use of posterior hamstring harvest in an active pediatric and adolescent cohort.

Endostructural and periosteal growth of the human humerus

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, Volume 306, Issue 1, Page 60-78, January 2023., 2023
Abstract The growth and development of long bones are of considerable interests in the fields of comparative anatomy and palaeoanthropology, as evolutionary changes and adaptations to specific physical activity patterns are expected to be revealed during bone ontogeny.

A clinico-epidemiological study to evaluate the outcomes of extensor tendon injury repair of the hand

open access: yesAdvances in Human Biology
Introduction: Extensor tendon injuries of the hand are more common in presentation than flexor tendon injuries. These wounds may leave the patient with significant, long-lasting damage if they are not appropriately treated when they first show. The result

Global trends in research of achilles tendon injury/rupture: A bibliometric analysis, 2000–2021

open access: yesFrontiers in Surgery, 2023
BackgroundThe Achilles tendon is the strongest and most susceptible tendon in humans. Achilles tendon injuries and ruptures have gradually attracted research attention. However, a bibliometric analysis of global research in this field is lacking.

Automatic Recognition of the Supraspinatus Tendinopathy from Ultrasound Images using Convolutional Neural Networks [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Tendon injuries like tendinopathies, full and partial thickness tears are prevalent, and the supraspinatus tendon (SST) is the most vulnerable ones in the rotator cuff. Early diagnosis of SST tendinopathies is of high importance and hard to achieve using ultrasound imaging.

A new strain energy function for modelling ligaments and tendons whose fascicles have a helical arrangement of fibrils [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Biomechanics 48 (2015) 3017-3025, 2015
A new strain energy function for the hyperelastic modelling of ligaments and tendons whose fascicles have a helical arrangement of fibrils is derived. The stress-strain response of a single fascicle whose fibrils exhibit varying levels of crimp throughout its radius is calculated and used to determine the form of the strain energy function.
