Helical fibrillar microstructure of tendon using serial block-face scanning electron microscopy and a mechanical model for interfibrillar load transfer

open access: yesJournal of the Royal Society Interface, 2019
Tendon's hierarchical structure allows for load transfer between its fibrillar elements at multiple length scales. Tendon microstructure is particularly important, because it includes the cells and their surrounding collagen fibrils, where mechanical ...

A Proof‐of‐Concept Assessment of a Novel Wearable Eyelid Muscle Device: A Pre‐Clinical Animal Cadaver Study for Eyelid Closure Restoration

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This article introduces a soft wearable eyelid sling device incorporating a hydraulic soft artificial muscle (SAM) for achieving complete closure of an eyelid. The SAM is driven by a cam mechanism that provides a displacement profile closely matched with those of a healthy eyelid.

Arthroscopic-Assisted Middle Trapezius Transfer Using an Achilles Tendon Allograft in Treatment of Isolated Supraspinatus Irreparable Rotator Cuff Tears in Lateral Decubitus Position

open access: yesArthroscopy Techniques
The optimal treatment for patients diagnosed with isolated supraspinatus irreparable rotator cuff tears continues to be a subject of debate. Joint-preserving methods, including partial repair, superior capsule reconstruction, balloon spacers, and tendon ...

A Cost Analysis of Carpal Tunnel Release Surgery Performed Wide Awake versus under Sedation. [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
BACKGROUND: Hand surgery under local anesthesia only has been used more frequently in recent years. The purpose of this study was to compare perioperative time and cost for carpal tunnel release performed under local anesthesia ( wide-awake local ...

Tibialis Anterior Tendon Transfer for Relapsing Idiopathic Clubfoot

open access: yesJBJS Essential Surgical Techniques, 2015
Overview Introduction A relapsed idiopathic clubfoot can be effectively treated with transfer of the entire tibialis anterior tendon to the mid-dorsum of the foot following repeated manipulations and serial casts.

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Advances in surface EMG signal simulation with analytical and numerical descriptions of the volume conductor [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Surface electromyographic (EMG) signal modeling is important for signal interpretation, testing of processing algorithms, detection system design, and didactic purposes. Various surface EMG signal models have been proposed in the literature.

Tendon Transfer Surgery: Focus on…

open access: yesJournal of Investigative Surgery, 2017
Median and Ulnar nerve palsy is a devastating condition that compromise hand function. A procedure of tendon transfer may be helpful to restore the movements by linking palsy muscles to other muscles able to contract. Scientific discoveries and technological innovations have profoundly changed this kind of surgery; studies on sarcomeres, for example ...

New approaches in detection and treatment of familial hypercholesterolemia [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is an autosomal dominant genetic disorder that clinically leads to increased low density lipoprotein-cholesterol (LDL-C) levels. As a consequence, FH patients are at high risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Mutations
