Shiny Beech Wood is Confirmed as an Indicator of Tension Wood
IAWA Journal, 2008This study sought to develop a method to quantify tension wood areas in stem discs. It was suggested that the shiny appearance of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) could provide an indication of tension wood. Each of 21 stem discs were digitised and the images analysed.

The Detection of Tension Wood with Fluorescent Dyes
Stain Technology, 1960Sections of a thickness of 15 β cut from unfixed material by means of a freezing microtome were treated for 1 hr with 0.2% aqueous solutions of a number of fluorochromes. Under normal microscopical conditions no uniform staining pattern could be observed.

A contribution to the ultrastructure of tension wood fibers
Wood Science and Technology, 1969Pronounced tension wood from four North-American hardwood species has been examined by light and electron microscopy. Delignified fibers were also studied. The gelatinous layer was in all cases loosely attached to S2 but varied considerably in thickness within each species and was in one case terminated towards the lumen by a layer resembling S3.

Micromechanics of wood subjected to axial tension
Wood Science and Technology, 1995The behaviour of a small group of wood fibers of Sitka spruce during tensile loading is investigated. The load-extension curves for both early and late wood fibers consist of three distinct segments. The first segment is almost a straight line, at some stage of loading a yield point is observed.

The fracture of wood in tension parallel to the grain
Canadian Journal of Civil Engineering, 1977The fracture of commercial Hem-Fir boards in the LR and LT modes was studied, using both saturated and air-dry specimens. Notched samples were tested in flexure (third-point loading). It was found that the concepts of linear elastic fracture mechanics could be applied, even when the crack extension was in a direction perpendicular to the initial notch.
