Biodiversity Change in Cultural Landscapes—The Rural Hotspot Hypothesis

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 15, Issue 1, January 2025.
In the recent history of cultural landscapes, agricultural intensification can no longer be discussed as the major driver controlling biodiversity. There is evidence that rural settlements act as interconnected rural hotspots and therefore form an ecological metapopulation in which small‐scale backyard habitats are capable of preserving and exchanging ...

Fish Protein Hydrolysates Mitigate the Adverse Effects of No‐Fishmeal Diets in Gilthead Seabream Juveniles

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
The aquaculture industry must continue to reduce its reliance on finite marine ingredients and promote biocircularity to enhance sustainability. This study evaluated the effects of no‐fishmeal (FM) diets and fish protein hydrolysates (FPHs) on the growth performance, antioxidant status, and immune responses of gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata ...

Locally‐Sourced Animal Protein Hydrolysates in High‐Plant‐Protein Diets Can Promote European Seabass Growth and Nutrient Utilization, Reducing Reliance on Fishmeal

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Upcycling meat and fish by‐products into bioactive protein hydrolysates promotes zero‐waste practices within the circular bioeconomy and provides locally‐sourced alternatives to replace fishmeal (FM) in aquafeeds. In this study, novel hydrolysates were developed from blue shark skin, fish by‐products, and swine processed animal protein, aiming to ...

Performance, Nutrient Digestibility and Physiological Resilience of Juvenile Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Fed Organic and Circular Economy‐Derived Diets

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2025, Issue 1, 2025.
Aquafeeds formulated with organic or circular economy‐derived ingredients aim to enhance sustainability and consumer acceptance. This study evaluated the global warming potential (GWP) and digestibility of such feeds, and assessed their effects on performance, feed utilisation and physiological resilience, defined as the ability to maintain tissue ...

A polyptych in the margins: accounting notes from early tenth‐century Laon

open access: yesEarly Medieval Europe, Volume 32, Issue 4, Page 518-542, November 2024.
This paper provides the first edition and thorough examination of marginal notes added to a ninth‐century Carolingian manuscript (Laon, Bibliothèque municipale, MS 424). A detailed paleographic, codicological, linguistic, and historical analysis of these additions allows us not only to trace their provenance to the early tenth‐century see of Laon but ...

A Method for Conveying Confidence in iNaturalist Observations: A Case Study Using Non‐Native Marine Species

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 10, October 2024.
Data quality, reliability and accuracy have long been recognised as barriers to unlocking the full potential of citizen science derived data. This study developed a score to assign confidence in iNaturalist observations and streamline the verification process.

Climate‐Smart Invasive Species Management for 21st Century Global Change Challenges

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 30, Issue 10, October 2024.
To facilitate and support invasive species management in a changing climate, we review how climate change and invasive species interact to impact the planning, action, and outcomes of invasive species management. Practitioners can enact climate‐smart invasive species management by considering how climate change may impact which species are likely to ...

Problem Directors and Corporate Risk‐Taking

open access: yesBritish Journal of Management, Volume 35, Issue 3, Page 1530-1558, July 2024.
Abstract This study investigates the impact of a ‘problem director’ on the risk‐taking propensity of a firm and its consequences for firm value. Analysing a sample of US companies, we find that corporate risk‐taking propensity increases when a firm appoints a problem director.
