Imaging with terahertz radiation

Reports on Progress in Physics, 2007
Within the last several years, the field of terahertz science and technology has changed dramatically. Many new advances in the technology for generation, manipulation, and detection of terahertz radiation have revolutionized the field. Much of this interest has been inspired by the promise of valuable new applications for terahertz imaging and sensing.

Quasi-optic terahertz imaging

Optics Letters, 2001
We demonstrate quasi-optical, diffraction-limited two-dimensional image production by means of reflected pulses of terahertz (THz) radiation. A spherical mirror is used to form a real one-to-one THz image of two 1-mm-diameter steel spheres, which is then scanned over a THz receiver.

Terahertz Imaging of Biological Tissues

2011
A reflective THz imaging system sensitive to small variations in water concentrations has been developed. Biological tissues such as skin, eyes and teeth were imaged to ascertain the systems response to tissue hydration. Difference in water concentrations translated to contrast in the THz images.

Inexpensive detector for terahertz imaging

Applied Optics, 2007
Glow discharge plasma, derived from direct-current gas breakdown, is investigated in order to realize an inexpensive terahertz (THz) room-temperature detector. Preliminary results for THz radiation show that glow discharge indicator lamps as room-temperature detectors yield good responsivity and noise-equivalent power.

Polarization information for terahertz imaging

2008 33rd International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter and Terahertz Waves, 2008
A method to analyze the change in the polarization state of a terahertz (THz) wave by using a typical electro-optic sampling setup with a ?110? zinc-blende crystal as a sensor is presented. To illustrate knowledge of the polarization of the THz pulse, the THz detection function in a ZnTe crystal is presented.

Terahertz near-field imaging

Physics in Medicine and Biology, 2002
A near-field probe is described that enables high spatial resolution imaging with terahertz (THz) pulses. The spatial resolution capabilities of the system lie in the range of few microns and we demonstrate a resolution of 7 microm using broad-banded THz pulses with an intensity maximum near 0.5 THz.

Terahertz imaging: applications and perspectives

Applied Optics, 2010
Terahertz (THz) spectroscopy, and especially THz imaging, holds large potential in the field of nondestructive, contact-free testing. The ongoing advances in the development of THz systems, as well as the appearance of the first related commercial products, indicate that large-scale market introduction of THz systems is rapidly approaching.

Application of Terahertz Spectroscopy and Imaging

Siberian Journal of Physics, 2009
We examined the feasibility of Terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) using a 4-mm-thick quartz crystal to extract the angle of rotation of THz radiation polarization induced by a two-color laser in air plasma. We also used the THz-TDS technique to identify explosives and melamine in mixtures.

Passive terahertz imager

2011 International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz Waves, 2011
The near filed terahertz wave imaging technology has been applied in security screening for detecting objects concealed under clothes. This paper describes two terahertz wave imaging system that acquires the body image by opto-mechanical scanner. One system is worked at reflective mode. Another system is worked at transitive mode.

Terahertz photonics for imaging

15th International Conference on Microwaves, Radar and Wireless Communications (IEEE Cat. No.04EX824), 2004
This paper concerns the application of microwave photonic techniques for Terahertz imaging. The system under investigation comprises of two high power, low noise electro-optic microchip lasers that mix in a traveling wave detector to produce a 200 GHz millimeter wave signal that is multiplied to .8 or 1.2 THz.
