Imaging with terahertz radiation

Reports on Progress in Physics, 2007
Within the last several years, the field of terahertz science and technology has changed dramatically. Many new advances in the technology for generation, manipulation, and detection of terahertz radiation have revolutionized the field. Much of this interest has been inspired by the promise of valuable new applications for terahertz imaging and sensing.

Terahertz transition radiation

Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Conference Digest of the 2004 Joint 29th International Conference on 2004 and 12th International Conference on Terahertz Electronics, 2004., 2006
We report on the observation of transition radiation generated by short optical pulses crossing the boundary between linear and non-linear materials. Unlike transition radiation observed with moving charges, we observe terahertz generation at the boundary between two media traversed by a femtosecond optical pulses.

Concentration of terahertz radiation for microsample spectroscopy

2014 39th International Conference on Infrared, Millimeter, and Terahertz waves (IRMMW-THz), 2014
A conical-horn, circular-waveguide coupler was designed and fabricated to couple THz radiation from spectrometers and concentrate it for low-volume samples. A demonstration was carried out on spores of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) - a bioparticle known to have strong signatures between 0.9 and 1.1 THz.

Imprinted diffractive optics for terahertz radiation

Optics Letters, 2007
Terahertz diffractive optic elements have been fabricated in polypropylene by imprinting with a silicon master. A silicon master is created with eight phase levels for high diffraction efficiency and etched using inductively coupled plasma reactive ion etching.

Broadband generation of terahertz radiation in a waveguide

Optics Letters, 2004
We report a novel geometry that allows for the phase-matched generation of broadband terahertz radiation in a polymer-based parallel-plate metal waveguide by means of optical rectification. Both the optical pump beam and the generated terahertz radiation propagate in the fundamental mode of the waveguide. This allows for noncritical phase matching over

Langmuir wave undulator for terahertz radiation

Optics Letters, 2012
A source of terhertz (THz) radiation based on the free-electron laser, where a plasma wave plays the role of undulator, is theoretically studied. This scheme can generate coherent photons in the range of 0.1-10 THz. The feasible physical parameters in laboratories are estimated.

SILICON FINFETS AS DETECTORS OF TERAHERTZ AND SUB-TERAHERTZ RADIATION

International Journal of High Speed Electronics and Systems, 2011
We report on terahertz detection (from 0.2 THz to 2.4 THz) by Si FinFETs of different widths (with 2, 20, and 200 fins connected in parallel). FinFETs (with a small number of fins and with feature sizes as short as 20 nm to 40 nm) showed a very high responsivity (far above that previously measured for standard CMOS).

Terahertz radiation and spectroscopy

OSA Annual Meeting, 1993
Various mechanisms for generating short pulses of terahertz radiation by excitation with ultrafast laser pulses are described, together with optoelectronic and bolometric means of terahertz detection.
