Recently, rice terraces also have been re-evaluated from the perspectives of water conservation or flood control. As a consequence, restoration has been conducted in many locations.

The non-polytechnic part of Newcastle's further education sector is to be centred on a site abutting the Charles Trevelyan Technical College, a new building (1964) with a 1967 extension, about a mile and a quarter from the civic centre and polytechnic campus. To a point nothing could be more fitting.
